However, there are several myths and misconceptions surrounding orthodontics that can create confusion and uncertainty. In this article, we will debunk common myths and provide factual information to help you make informed decisions about orthodontic treatment. Let’s separate fact from fiction and uncover the truth behind these popular misconceptions. ## Myth 1: Orthodontic Treatment Is Only for Children and Teens Fact: Orthodontic treatment is not limited to children and teenagers. While it’s true that many orthodontic cases are addressed during adolescence, adults can also benefit from orthodontic treatment. The advancements in orthodontic technology have made it possible to achieve great results for patients of all ages. Whether you’re a teenager or an adult, orthodontic treatment can help correct misaligned teeth, improve your bite, and enhance your overall oral health. Visit our page on Orthodontics for Adults to learn more about the benefits of orthodontic treatment for adults in Mesa. ## Myth 2: Braces Are the Only Option for Orthodontic Treatment Fact: While traditional braces are a widely used and effective treatment option, they are not the only choice available. Orthodontics now offers various alternatives to braces, including clear aligners such as Invisalign, ClearCorrect, SureSmile, and Six Month Smiles. These alternatives provide discreet and convenient options for teeth alignment, depending on your specific needs and preferences. To learn more about the different treatment options, visit our page on Aligners vs. Braces. ## Myth 3: Orthodontic Treatment Is Painful and Uncomfortable Fact: While it’s normal to experience some discomfort or mild soreness during the initial stages of orthodontic treatment, modern techniques and advancements have significantly reduced the level of discomfort associated with orthodontics. Your orthodontist will ensure that you are as comfortable as possible throughout your treatment. Additionally, the satisfaction of achieving a beautifully aligned smile outweighs any temporary discomfort you may experience. To understand how orthodontic treatment works and the sensations you may encounter, visit our page on How Do Braces Work?. ## Myth 4: Orthodontic Treatment Takes Several Years Fact: The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the type of treatment chosen. While some cases may require more extended treatment periods, many orthodontic treatments are completed within 12 to 24 months. It’s important to remember that orthodontic treatment is a gradual process aimed at achieving long-term results. Your orthodontist will develop a personalized treatment plan and provide an estimated timeline for your specific case. ## Myth 5: Orthodontic Treatment Is Purely Cosmetic Fact: While orthodontic treatment can undoubtedly enhance the appearance of your smile, its benefits extend far beyond cosmetics. Correcting misaligned teeth and bite irregularities improves oral health by facilitating better cleaning and reducing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and jaw problems. Orthodontic treatment can also enhance speech, improve chewing efficiency, and prevent excessive tooth wear. It’s essential to recognize that orthodontics contributes to both aesthetic and functional aspects of your overall oral health. ## Myth 6: Orthodontic Treatment Is Expensive Fact: The cost of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case, the treatment option chosen, and other factors. While orthodontic treatment represents an investment in your oral health, it’s important to consider the long-term benefits it provides. Many orthodontic practices offer flexible payment plans and financing options to make treatment more affordable. Additionally, the cost of not addressing orthodontic issues can lead to more extensive and costly dental problems in the future. ## Myth 7: Orthodontic Treatment Is Only for Severely Misaligned Teeth Fact: Orthodontic treatment is not limited to severe cases of misalignment. Even minor orthodontic issues can benefit from treatment. Whether you have crowded teeth, gaps, overbite, or underbite, orthodontic intervention can help address these concerns and improve the overall alignment of your teeth. Early orthodontic treatment, as explained in our Early Orthodontics page, can be particularly beneficial in guiding proper jaw development and preventing more severe issues in the future. ## Myth 8: Orthodontic Treatment Causes Speech Impediments Fact: While it may take a short period of adjustment for your tongue and lips to adapt to the presence of orthodontic appliances, orthodontic treatment itself does not cause speech impediments. In fact, orthodontic treatment can often help improve speech clarity by addressing underlying issues, such as misaligned teeth or jaw discrepancies, that may have been contributing to speech difficulties. ## Myth 9: Once Orthodontic Treatment Is Complete, No Further Maintenance Is Required Fact: After completing your orthodontic treatment, you will be provided with retainers to maintain the results achieved. Retainers are essential to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions. It’s crucial to follow the post-treatment care guidelines provided by your orthodontist, which may include wearing retainers as instructed and attending regular follow-up appointments. Our page on Retainers provides detailed information on their role and care instructions. Separating the myths from the facts is crucial to make informed decisions about your orthodontic treatment. Don’t let the stereotypes surrounding orthodontic treatment hold you back. Braces have become more comfortable and discreet than ever, with a wide range of exciting options available to enhance your smile. There are numerous reasons why patients schedule consultations with drName to explore the potential benefits of braces. One common issue is malocclusion, which refers to a misalignment of teeth between the upper and lower arches. This condition is often known as an overbite or underbite. Here are the three categories to consider: - Class I: An ideal relationship between your arches, with perfectly aligned molars, but with teeth crowding or spacing problems. - Class II: The upper jaw extends too far forward, resulting in an overbite. - Class III: The lower jaw extends too far forward, resulting in an underbite. If you have crowded teeth, it means there isn’t enough space in your mouth to accommodate all of them, leading to overlapping, rotation, or incorrect positioning. On the other hand, spacing problems occur when there is excessive space in your mouth, which can be due to a large jaw or small teeth. If you neglect to address these orthodontic problems by pursuing braces, you may experience the following conditions: - Tooth decay and gum disease - Difficulty chewing and eating - Teeth grinding or clenching - Speech impairments - Sleep apnea and snoring - Jaw pain or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ) ## What is early orthodontics? According to the American Association of Orthodontists, it is recommended that children have their first orthodontic appointment by the age of 7. At this stage, teeth and jaws are still developing, and addressing certain conditions becomes easier before growth is complete. Early orthodontic intervention may involve guiding permanent teeth into better positions as they emerge, using a palatal expander to widen the palate for proper sizing of the upper arch, or recommending partial braces or space maintainers to prevent tooth crowding. In some cases, headgear may be beneficial to correct misaligned jaws. However, it’s important to note that not all young patients require intervention. drName will conduct diagnostic tests, including X-rays, to determine the ideal timing for treatment, which may be during the teenage years or not required at all. ## What are traditional braces? Traditional braces consist of metal brackets, bands, and wires securely attached to your teeth throughout the treatment process. These braces utilize small elastic bands to hold the wire in place, allowing gradual teeth movement as desired. Some patients, especially younger ones, enjoy adding a personal touch to their braces by choosing fun colors for the elastics, adding a touch of individuality to their smiles. Regular visits to practiceName every 4 to 6 weeks are necessary to adjust the wire and ensure progress continues. The duration of treatment varies but typically ranges from 1 to 3 years. Traditional braces are particularly effective in addressing complex orthodontic issues that may not be as successfully treated with alternative methods. As these braces are securely cemented in your mouth, there is no risk of misplacing or not wearing them as required. It is common to experience some discomfort when the wire is tightened and your teeth adjust to new positions. If traditional braces are recommended for you, please follow these guidelines: - Adhere to drName’s list of foods to avoid while wearing braces. Chewy, hard, or sticky foods can damage your braces and contribute to tooth decay. - Take extra care when performing oral hygiene tasks, including brushing and flossing. This may require some additional effort due to the presence of braces, but it is crucial for maintaining good oral health. - Attend all scheduled appointments to stay on track with your treatment timeline and increase the likelihood of successful outcomes. ## What are Damon braces? Damon braces offer a fresh approach to traditional orthodontic treatment. They are classified as self-ligating braces, eliminating the need for elastic bands. Instead, a sliding mechanism secures the wire in place, allowing teeth to move freely and comfortably at their own pace. The Damon system utilizes highly advanced memory wires that facilitate faster tooth movement, resulting in fewer adjustments. With Damon braces, tooth alignment can often be achieved without the necessity for tooth extractions or the use of palatal expanders. An alternative option known as Damon Clear braces is also available. These braces are nearly invisible in your smile and are resistant to discoloration or staining. Damon braces are designed to provide comfort and require less maintenance. Compared to traditional braces, they typically require approximately seven fewer office visits. Additionally, treatment time may be reduced by up to six months when utilizing Damon braces. Caring for Damon braces is straightforward and hassle-free. ## What are clear aligners? Clear aligners represent the pinnacle of discreet orthodontic treatment, particularly favored by adult patients. These aligners are constructed from clear plastic material and are custom-made to fit each patient precisely. Utilizing advanced imaging and impressions, clear aligners gradually guide teeth into improved positions with minimal discomfort and inconvenience compared to traditional braces. Typically, aligners are worn for approximately two weeks before progressing to the next set in the series. The duration of the entire treatment process ranges from 6 to 18 months, depending on the individual’s specific conditions. Follow-up visits to practiceName are generally required every six weeks or as recommended by the orthodontist, and no uncomfortable adjustments are necessary. One of the most appealing features of clear aligners is their removability, allowing easy removal for eating and oral hygiene. This means no dietary restrictions and the ability to maintain your regular dental care routine. For optimal results, it is advised to wear aligners for at least 22 hours a day. Additionally, a version of clear aligners designed specifically for teens is available, offering extra perks such as an indicator dot that alerts the teen when it is time to change to the next aligner. ## What happens after braces? After any kind of braces treatment, wearing a retainer is an important step in maintain the results of treatment. Otherwise, your teeth will slowly move out of place. Two common types of retainers are used by our dental office: Removable – a customized acrylic mold is made from impressions of your mouth that fits into your palate. The acrylic piece attaches to hooks that go around the back of your teeth and there’s a wire across the front. On your lower arch, the acrylic portion is U-shaped due to your tongue. You should wear your retainers all the time for the first three months after braces, and then only at night if your teeth are not shifting. For ideal results, drName suggests you wear your retainers at night indefinitely. Fixed – a thin wire is bonded in place across the back of your teeth. It is very strong and should be only removed by drName. These are not visible since they are behind your teeth, but can be hard to clean around. If a fixed retainer becomes loose, schedule an appointment for repair. Most patients are advised to keep their fixed retainers in place for life. Periodic maintenance is necessary with both types of retainers. Regular dental checkups and cleanings help with hygiene to ensure the best oral health. With proper retainer wear, you can enjoy your new smile forever. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT DENTAL BRACES ## How long does orthodontic treatment typically last? When you’re embarrassed about the way your teeth look and it’s impacting your lifestyle and confidence level, it’s time to visit an orthodontist like drName at practiceName in Mesa for help. But you don’t want to wear braces, you say? The good news is that there’s another option besides traditional metal braces. Clear aligners are the wave of the future in providing beautiful smiles without the hassles of a mouth full of metal. ## What are clear aligners? In an effort to address the complaints of patients who didn’t like the visibility and hassles of traditional braces, the creators of clear aligners came up with the first truly invisible way to straighten teeth. Clear aligners have been a game changer for those who want their smiles improved discreetly, instead of it being so obvious that orthodontic treatment is underway. ### How do they work? Aligners are custom-made for each patient using strong, clear plastic. There are no metal brackets or wires required; treatment simply consists of wearing a series of clear aligners. drName takes molds of your mouth to be used to create personalized trays that make gradual adjustments to reposition your teeth. The aligners gently exert pressure to shift teeth into desired positions, including horizontal, vertical or rotated movements. The removeable trays should be worn at least 20 hours every day for the best results, and each aligner is worn for three weeks before you switch to the next one in the series of trays. Length of treatment depends on the severity of your condition, as well as properly following drName’s instructions during treatment. ## What are the benefits? Clear aligners provide many benefits to patients. These include: - Invisible – the aligners are so invisible that others may not even notice you’re wearing them. - Removeable – aligners are removed during eating and cleaning. There are no restrictions about what you can eat, and you can follow your normal oral hygiene routine. - Comfortable – there are no wires to poke your mouth and the smooth plastic aligners do not cause irritation. - Confidence – your confidence level improves both during and after treatment. - Tooth condition – aligners can help prevent tooth wear caused by grinding. This saves your tooth enamel and lowers your risk for decay, damage or infection. ### Are they right for me? Clear aligners are a great choice for patients with mild to moderate tooth misalignment, gaps, or crowding. However, patients with more severe issues, including overbites or underbites, may not be good candidates for clear aligners. drName is experienced in treating patients with all levels of orthodontic problems and can tell you if clear aligners are right for you. --- ## ClearCorrect - Mesa Orthodontist Source: /treatments/clearcorrect-mesa/ Summary: ClearCorrect® Aligners provide a discreet and comfortable way to straighten your teeth. Each aligner is designed to gradually shift the teeth into their ideal positions, and patients typically wear each set of aligners for a period of two to three weeks before switching to the next set in the series. ## ClearCorrect® vs. Traditional Braces ### Say Goodbye to Noticeable Metal Braces with ClearCorrect® Aligners While traditional metal braces are still a highly effective method for straightening teeth and treating misaligned jaws, many people find them noticeable and uncomfortable to wear. The wires, brackets, and rubber bands of traditional braces can negatively impact a person’s appearance and confidence, especially those with busy or professional lifestyles. ### Eat Your Favorite Foods with ClearCorrect® Braces – No Restrictions! At practiceName, we understand the inconvenience of having to drastically change your diet or skip out on your favorite foods when wearing braces due to food getting stuck in the brackets. We offer alternative treatments that can straighten your teeth without these restrictions. This can make the process of getting braces less frustrating and more convenient, ultimately leading to better oral health. ### ClearCorrect® Aligners Offer Convenience and Discretion for Teeth Straightening ClearCorrect® offers a more convenient and discreet option for teeth straightening compared to traditional braces. Patients can easily remove the aligners themselves while eating, which allows for more freedom in food choices and eliminates the embarrassment of having food stuck in the brackets. ClearCorrect® aligners are also comfortable to wear, leaving patients with more confidence to go about their daily activities. ## Continue Playing Sports with ClearCorrect® Aligners and Mouthguards One of the most significant advantages of ClearCorrect® over traditional braces is the ability to remove the aligners during sports or other physical activities. For athletes, wearing a mouthguard is essential for protecting the teeth, but traditional braces can make it difficult to wear one. With ClearCorrect®, patients can remove the aligners to wear a mouthguard comfortably. This makes it easier for patients to continue to participate in sports and other activities while undergoing orthodontic treatment. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ClearCorrect® ## What should I expect during treatment? While wearing clear aligners, brief periods of discomfort may occur when new aligners are put on. Expect changes in your ‘bite,’ a lisp at first, and engagers (“buttons”) to assist the aligner in moving teeth. ## Will the aligners hurt? How comfortable are the aligners? Some tenderness or sensitivity may occur during the first few days of wearing a new aligner, but the more you wear the aligner, the more comfortable it becomes. Sores and irritation are possible but rare. ClearCorrect® aligners are among the most comfortable in the industry. ## Are the aligners hard to keep clean? How do I clean them? The aligners are fairly simple to keep clean, but proper oral hygiene is essential. Most aligners can be cleaned with a toothbrush, cool water, and non-abrasive toothpaste. Cleaning instructions are on every bag of new aligners. ## I’ve seen people with bumps on their aligners – what are they? Engagers (bumps) may be temporarily affixed to teeth depending on the treatment. They assist with difficult tooth movements and can be easily removed. ## How long will I be in treatment? Treatment time varies based on treatment goals, and the amount of correction needed. Treatment time can exceed estimates due to factors such as poor compliance, missing appointments, and poor oral hygiene. ## What is the daily wear schedule? It is recommended to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day. They should only be removed for meals, brushing and flossing. ## Do I have to wear the aligners forever? What happens after treatment? While treatment aligners have a determined wear period, retainers may need to be worn for an extended period based on the treatment result. ## What are the clear aligners made of? ClearCorrect® aligners are made of a plastic specially formulated for ClearCorrect. It is a polyurethane resin that is superior in stress retention, impact resistance, clarity, and stain resistance. It has also been tested for biocompatibility. ## Do the aligners contain BPA or phthalates? No. ClearCorrect® aligners are made without BPA or phthalates and have been approved by the FDA. ## Is there a dentist near me in Mesa that offers ClearCorrect® aligners? Numerous problems can result from orthodontic issues, not the least of which is lowered self-esteem. Traditional braces are a common solution for improving smiles, but many patients are unhappy with the idea of having a mouth full of metal throughout treatment. drName at practiceName in Mesa knows how you feel. That’s why the option of Damon Clear braces is offered to our patients. ## Traditional braces: Metal braces are the traditional method for correcting smiles. This involves bonding metal brackets onto your teeth, metal bands onto your back teeth, and an archwire connected to the brackets and held in place by elastic o-rings. The purpose of the archwire is to place pressure on the brackets and guide your teeth into new positions. Traditional braces are very effective in correcting smiles, but they are also extremely visible and often uncomfortable. ### Damon Clear braces: The clear-colored version of Damon braces is called Damon Clear. Instead of the metal brackets used in Damon braces, these use clear brackets on your teeth. There are also no elastic o-rings holding the archwire in place, since Damon braces employ a sliding mechanism. This allows the archwire to tighten gradually by itself as it moves your teeth into better alignment. By eliminating visible metal parts and elastic o-rings, Damon Clear is nearly invisible in your mouth. ## Aligners: You may wonder why you shouldn’t choose Invisalign clear aligners instead of Damon Clear braces. One reason is that not all patients are good candidates for aligners, because certain orthodontic issues can’t be adequately repaired using aligners. Another reason is that some people have a hard time keeping up with removeable aligners; they are easy to lose when you remove them to eat or brush your teeth. Damon Clear offers practically invisible braces that you never have to worry about misplacing. ### Damon Clear benefits: Here are some advantages of choosing Damon Clear: - Research shows that Damon Clear braces work about six months faster than traditional braces. The unique sliding mechanism allows teeth to move more easily, which means faster improvements. - These braces are clear in your smile, making them less noticeable to others. - A common cause of discomfort with traditional braces is tightening them to instigate tooth movement, but Damon Clear does not require tightening. Therefore, these braces are more comfortable. - Convenience is improved due to fewer office visits to practiceName and simpler oral hygiene tasks. --- ## Damon System Braces - Mesa Orthodontist Source: /treatments/damon-system-braces/ An unsightly smile can affect your whole life: you may be embarrassed by your appearance, your confidence can be defeated, your teeth may wear unevenly, you might have jaw pain. Traditional braces have been the solution for correcting smiles for many years, but new technologies have offered new choices in orthodontics. drName at practiceName in Mesa provides patients with Damon System braces as a great way to improve smiles. ## What are Damon System braces? This method maintains the successful elements of traditional braces and improves upon those that were lacking. Damon System braces are very effective and aesthetically appealing, offering a streamlined version of traditional braces. Not all orthodontists offer this system to patients, but practiceName is pleased to provide this innovative option. ### How do Damon System braces work? These braces shift your teeth into better alignment in a different way than other braces. Damon braces have self-litigating brackets and wires. Instead of having brackets that require tightening and archwires that are held in place by o-rings, Damon braces use a sliding mechanism. This mechanism attaches the archwire to the brackets, allowing more natural movement as your teeth move into place. ## What are the benefits of Damon System braces? This system offers a range of benefits, including: - Appearance – elastic ties are not necessary with these self-litigating braces, resulting in a more discreet appearance than traditional braces. There is also the option of getting Damon Clear, a nearly invisible form of Damon braces. - Reliability – fewer parts to break means fewer problems with these braces. - Effectiveness – teeth move faster, so treatment time is shorter. - Comfort – the light force required for movement means less discomfort for patients. - Convenience – less visits to practiceName are required because fewer adjustments are needed throughout treatment. - Oral health – less friction during teeth movement causes less risk of tooth erosion. - Oral hygiene – both the braces and your teeth are easier to keep clean and the risk for cavities is lessened. ### Are there any disadvantages to Damon System braces? There are only a few disadvantages to these braces. The metal wires are still noticeable in your smile, although choosing Damon Clear minimizes their appearance. Like traditional braces, there is a period of adjustment to wearing Damon braces. Also, they usually cost more than traditional braces. The reduced treatment time and improved comfort level may make the cost increase worth it to you though. Many of drName’s patients find Damon braces well worth the investment in using this new technology to transform their smiles. --- ## Invisalign FAQ - Mesa Orthodontist Source: /treatments/invisalign-faq/ Invisalign is a revolutionary way to transform smiles without the hassles and embarrassment of traditional braces. drName at practiceName in Mesa is pleased to offer this method to patients. Because it is a newer way to correct smiles, patients often have questions about Invisalign. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions and drName’s response to them. #### What does Invisalign treat? Just like traditional braces, Invisalign can treat many issues such as crowding, spacing, overbites, and crossbites. #### How long will treatment take? It depends on the patient’s condition, but the average treatment time is between 6 to 18 months. This is less time than the average length of treatment with traditional braces. #### How long do I have to wear my aligners? For best results in the optimum timeframe, aligners should be worn about 22 hours per day. They should be removed for eating, oral hygiene, and the occasional special occasion. #### Will I feel any discomfort? Minor pressure is normal when you begin Invisalign treatment. This discomfort is a good sign though because it means your teeth are moving into their desired locations. #### Will I have to avoid certain foods? There are no restrictions at all about what you can eat or drink during Invisalign treatment because the aligners are removed. Always clean your aligners before putting them back in your mouth. #### How can I keep my aligners clean? Brush your aligners gently as you would your teeth, using a soft toothbrush and rinsing with warm water. #### Will the aligners affect my speech? You can expect a short period of adjustment when you first start wearing your aligners. Your speech may be slightly affected, but you’ll get used to them as you speak and will no longer have speech impacts. #### Can I smoke during Invisalign treatment? Smoking is highly discouraged when wearing Invisalign aligners because they may discolor or warp. If smoking is a habit you can’t break, remove your aligners first. #### Can I chew gum during treatment? Remove your aligners before chewing gum so that it doesn’t become stuck on the plastic. As you might guess, chewing gum is discouraged because removing your aligners more than a couple hours a day can impact your treatment success. #### How often will I need to see an orthodontist during treatment? Most patients visit drName about once every eight weeks to ensure treatment is progressing as it should. #### What happens after treatment is over? As with traditional braces, retainers are required after Invisalign treatment to promote your teeth staying in their new positions. It’s simple though because you just wear the final set of aligners in your series instead of having to get a new appliance. #### Does Invisalign work for kids? Kids are candidates for Invisalign as long as all of their permanent teeth, including second molars, have fully erupted. Invisalign Teen is marketed just for teenagers with some unique characteristics designed for that age group. #### Does Invisalign cost more than braces? Cost varies between patients due to condition and length of treatment. Invisalign is a little more expensive than traditional braces for the same treatment time, but the costs typically even out because Invisalign treatment is often faster. The staff at practiceName is happy to provide the cost information you need to help make your decision about treatment. --- ## Invisalign Mesa dentist offering Invisalign Source: /treatments/invisalign-mesa/ Summary: Invisalign clear aligners at our Mesa dental office in Mesa Invisalign Home » Treatments » Invisalign # Invisalign Mesa ## Straighten your teeth without sacrificing your lifestyle with Invisalign Clear Aligners Invisalign® clear aligners offer a modern solution for straightening teeth without the need for traditional metal braces. Say goodbye to unsightly brackets and wires and hello to the clear, comfortable, and discreet way to achieve your dream smile. Invisalign® aligners are custom-made to fit your teeth and gradually shift them into place, all while being virtually invisible. With Invisalign® clear aligners, you can straighten your teeth while still maintaining your lifestyle and confidence. Keep reading to learn more about how Invisalign® can transform your smile. - What exactly is Invisalign®? - Invisalign® Vs Braces - How Invisalign® is different - The Invisalign® process - Invisalign® vs Invisalign® Teen - Frequently asked questions about Invisalign® ## What Exactly is Invisalign®? Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment that involves a series of clear plastic aligners designed to fit over the teeth. These aligners work to gently shift the teeth to their proper positions, and are conveniently removable for eating and brushing your teeth, much like retainers. Typically, each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks before moving onto the next, with progress monitored periodically by a dentist or orthodontist to ensure that teeth are moving as they should be. ### Invisalign® can treat the following: - Overbites - Crossbites - Gaps - Open Bite - Overcrowding - Underbite ## Invisalign® Vs Braces Invisalign® is the ideal solution for anyone seeking a comfortable and discreet orthodontic treatment. Unlike traditional braces that rely on wires and brackets, Invisalign’s® removable aligners are much more comfortable to wear, allowing patients to eat, drink, and maintain their oral hygiene routines with ease. Additionally, Invisalign’s® clear and transparent material is perfect for those who don’t want to draw attention to their orthodontic treatment. With Invisalign, there is no need for frequent adjustments or tightening, and fewer trips to the dentist are required compared to traditional braces. Finally, Invisalign’s® effects are often noticeable in a shorter period than traditional braces, allowing patients to achieve the smile they desire more quickly. ## How Invisalign® Is Different ### Comfortable Smooth plastic surfaces offer a comfort level to the tongue and cheeks unequaled by other forms of straightening. ### Efficient Gradual pressure on specific teeth with each aligner means less stress and shortened treatment times, in many cases. ### Convenient We dispense several sets of aligners at once, allowing you to change to a new one at home every two weeks. ### Removable No more getting food caught in your braces. Easily brush and floss your teeth for better oral hygiene. ## The Invisalign® process Initial Consultation During your first appointment, your dentist will evaluate your mouth and discuss your cosmetic dentistry goals. If Invisalign is a viable option for you, the dentist will explain the treatment process and the estimated length of treatment. If it isn’t, your dentist will discuss other options with you. Molding Process Next, your dentist will take digital scans, photographs, and x-rays to create a precise model of your teeth. This model is sent to the Invisalign laboratory to make your custom aligner trays. Fitting the First Tray When your trays are ready, your dentist will fit the first one to your teeth. Small, clear attachments may also be placed on your teeth to help the trays stay in place. Your dentist will check the fit of your aligner trays and explain your aftercare program. Follow-Up Appointments You’ll need to return periodically to check on your progress, but you won’t need to see the dentist each time you switch to a new aligner tray. If your treatment isn’t progressing as planned, you may need to have a new digital scan taken to order an additional set of aligners. ## Difference Between Invisalign® and Invisalign® Teen Invisalign Teen is quite similar to Invisalign for adults, but there are two significant differences between the two treatments: Aligner Indicator Unlike Invisalign for adults, the aligners used in Invisalign Teen have a tiny dot on the back. That dot will change color from blue to clear to white depending on how often a teenager wears his or her aligners. This serves as a visual reminder for teenagers to wear their aligners consistently. Replacement Aligners Teens are often more active and may be less responsible with their belongings compared to adults. Therefore, Invisalign Teen patients receive more replacement aligners than adult patients to account for potential loss or damage. Other than these differences, Invisalign treatment for both adults and teens is essentially the same. Invisalign can be used to treat the same kinds of dental issues, and the materials used are identical for both age groups. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT INVISALIGN® ## How long does Invisalign® treatment take? The length of treatment with Invisalign® varies depending on the complexity of the case, but it typically takes between 6-18 months. ## Is Invisalign® treatment painful? Patients may experience some mild discomfort or pressure when they switch to a new set of aligners, but it is typically less painful than traditional braces. ## How often do I need to wear my Invisalign® aligners? For best results, Invisalign® aligners should be worn for 20-22 hours per day, and only removed for eating, drinking, and brushing teeth. ## Can I eat and drink with my Invisalign® aligners in? It is recommended that patients remove their Invisalign® aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water, to prevent staining and damage to the aligners. ## Can I play sports or musical instruments with Invisalign® aligners in? Yes, Invisalign® aligners can be worn during most activities, including sports and playing musical instruments. However, patients should wear a mouthguard during contact sports. ## Will Invisalign® aligners affect my speech? While some patients may experience a slight lisp during the first few days of wearing Invisalign® aligners, it typically resolves quickly as the patient becomes accustomed to the aligners. ## How often do I need to visit the dentist during Invisalign® treatment? Patients typically visit their dentist or orthodontist every 6-8 weeks to monitor progress and receive new sets of Invisalign®. ## How much does Invisalign® treatment cost? The cost of Invisalign® treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case, but it is generally comparable to the cost of traditional braces. The dental team at practiceName can provide a more specific cost estimate based on your individual needs. ## Is there a dentist near me in Mesa that offers Invisalign®? Attending school, preparing for college, playing sports, participating in extra-curricular activities, dating – all of these things add up to a very busy and often stressed teenager. Invisalign Teen offers kids this age one less thing to worry about. Straightening teeth is possible without dealing with unsightly and uncomfortable metal brackets and wires in your mouth. drName at practiceName in Mesa is experienced in providing this innovative solution for improving teen smiles. ## What is Invisalign Teen? This exciting new technology has revolutionized orthodontic treatment. Treatment consists of wearing clear plastic removeable aligners about 22 hours per day that gradually move teeth into better positions. They are custom-made for each patient in a series of aligners that change as treatment progresses. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before it’s time to switch to the next set in the series. Teeth gradually move each week, and the average number of aligners ranges from 18-30 depending on each patient’s condition. drName will monitor your progress every 8-10 weeks. If you follow the instructions to remove the aligners only to eat, drink, brush and floss, treatment should last on average from 6-15 months. ### Why choose Invisalign Teen? This method does away with conspicuous braces treatment. The aligners are nearly invisible in your smile, so others may not even notice you’re wearing them. They are removeable for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene. This means no diet restrictions and no difficulties cleaning around cumbersome wires and brackets. Aligners are comfortable and produce less pain while your teeth are moving compared to traditional braces. Invisalign Teen was designed with the needs of teenagers in mind. For example, a dot on the aligners changes from blue to clear to indicate the length of time the aligner has been worn, helping teens know when it’s time to switch to the next aligner in the series. Also, drName at practiceName offers six free replacement aligners to rescue busy teens who lose or break them. ## What problems does Invisalign Teen resolve? A wide variety of orthodontic conditions can be treated with Invisalign Teen, including: - Teeth crowding - Teeth gaps - Overbite - Underbite - Crossbite ### How do I get started with treatment? The first step is making an appointment with drName to evaluate your condition and make sure Invisalign Teen is right for you. If so, you will learn all about the product and the process so you can begin your road to a hassle-free, beautiful smile. --- ## Retainers - Mesa Orthodontist Source: /treatments/retainers/ Home » Treatments » Retainers # Orthodontic Retainers Types of Retainers | FAQ about Orthodontics After you’ve gone through the time and expense that orthodontic treatment requires, you certainly don’t want to ruin its wonderful outcome by not wearing your retainers. The purpose of retainers is to stabilize the work that braces have done, helping to ensure that your teeth will remain in their new positions. There are a couple of main types of retainers – removable or fixed – that drName at practiceName in Mesa might use with patients. ## Types of Retainers There are several types of orthodontic retainers available to help maintain the alignment of your teeth after orthodontic treatment. The type of retainer recommended for you will depend on your specific orthodontic needs and the recommendations of your orthodontist. It’s important to follow the instructions provided and wear your retainer as prescribed to ensure the long-term stability of your orthodontic results. Hawley Retainers: Hawley retainers consist of a plastic acrylic base that rests against the roof of the mouth or the tongue-side of the lower teeth. They also have a wire component that wraps around the front teeth, keeping them in place. These retainers are adjustable and can be customized with various colors and designs. Clear Retainers: Clear retainers, also known as Essix retainers, are made of a transparent plastic material that fits snugly over your teeth. They are discreet and offer a more aesthetic option compared to other types of retainers. Clear retainers are removable and should be worn as instructed by your orthodontist. Fixed Retainers: Fixed retainers, also called bonded or permanent retainers, are small wires that are bonded to the back of the teeth. These retainers are not removable and provide continuous support to prevent teeth from shifting. Fixed retainers are typically used for the lower front teeth, where the risk of relapse is higher. Removable Retainers: Removable retainers, like the Essix retainer, can be taken out for eating, brushing, and flossing. They are made of a clear plastic material and should be worn as instructed by your orthodontist to maintain the alignment of your teeth. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ORTHODONTIC RETAINERS ## How long do I need to wear my orthodontic retainer? The duration of retainer wear varies depending on your specific orthodontic treatment and individual factors. In most cases, orthodontists recommend wearing retainers full-time for the first few months after braces or aligner treatment. After that, you may transition to wearing them only at night. However, it’s essential to follow your orthodontist’s instructions as they may recommend a longer duration of retainer wear to maintain the alignment of your teeth effectively. ## How do I clean my orthodontic retainer? To keep your retainer clean and free from bacteria buildup, it’s crucial to establish a regular cleaning routine. Removable retainers, such as Hawley or clear retainers, can be gently brushed with a soft toothbrush using mild soap or non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid using hot water or harsh chemicals that could damage the retainer. Fixed retainers can be cleaned by using floss threaders or interdental brushes to reach underneath the wire and remove any plaque or debris. ## Can I wear my old retainer if I haven't worn it for a while? It is generally not recommended to wear an old retainer that you haven’t used for an extended period. Teeth may have shifted during the time you were not wearing the retainer, and the old retainer may no longer fit properly or provide the necessary support. It is best to consult with your orthodontist if you have not been wearing your retainer consistently to determine the best course of action, which may involve getting a new retainer or exploring other options to maintain your teeth alignment. ## What should I do if my retainer feels tight or uncomfortable? If your retainer feels tight or uncomfortable, it could indicate changes in your teeth alignment or that the retainer needs adjustment. Contact our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. We will evaluate the fit of your retainer and make any necessary modifications to ensure it provides the proper support while maintaining your teeth alignment. Avoid attempting to adjust the retainer yourself, as this can lead to further complications or discomfort. ## Is there an orthodontist near me in Mesa that offers orthodontic retainers? Dental braces have been a trusted and effective orthodontic treatment for decades, and our experienced team is here to guide you through your braces journey with personalized care and expertise. Whether you’re considering traditional metal braces or exploring more discreet options, we offer a comprehensive range of orthodontic solutions to meet your unique needs. ## Metal Braces Metal braces remain the most widely used orthodontic treatment due to their exceptional effectiveness. They have a proven track record of success and continue to deliver outstanding results. The metal braces available today have undergone significant advancements, making them smaller and more comfortable compared to their predecessors. This means that while benefiting from the reliability and efficiency of metal braces, patients can now enjoy a sleeker and more streamlined orthodontic experience. At practiceName, we utilize metal braces composed of high-grade stainless steel, ensuring durability and effectiveness. These braces consist of several components: Brackets: The brackets are the main component of the braces and are securely attached to your teeth using a special bonding glue. These brackets serve as the foundation for the entire orthodontic system. rchwire: The archwire is a thin metal wire that connects the brackets. It applies gentle pressure to guide your teeth into their desired positions. The archwire plays a crucial role in the movement and alignment of your teeth throughout the treatment process. Ligature Ties: Also known as ligature elastics or O-ties, these small colored ties secure the archwire to the brackets. They come in various colors, allowing you to personalize your braces. Adults often prefer translucent ties to make them less noticeable. Together, these components work in harmony to facilitate the gradual movement and alignment of your teeth, helping you achieve a beautiful and healthy smile. Our orthodontic team will guide you through the process and provide the necessary adjustments to ensure the success of your treatment. ## Self-Ligating Braces Self-ligating braces present a modern alternative to traditional metal braces, offering enhanced comfort and potentially shorter treatment durations. While they employ brackets and wires similar to traditional braces, self-ligating braces eliminate the need for ligature ties or O-rings. Instead, a specially designed door with an internal clip secures the archwires in place, reducing friction and providing a more comfortable experience. These braces are available in various materials, including metal, ceramic, or clear brackets, making them a versatile choice suitable for patients of all ages. ### How Do They Work? The mechanics of self-ligating braces differ from traditional metal braces as they eliminate the use of elastic ligatures or O-ties. Instead, these braces feature a door-clip mechanism that securely holds the archwire in place. This unique design reduces friction and pressure on the teeth, resulting in a more comfortable orthodontic experience without compromising reliability. Another advantage of self-ligating braces is that they may require fewer adjustment appointments compared to traditional braces since there are no ligature ties to replace. This translates to less time spent at our office and more freedom to enjoy your daily activities. ### Self-ligating Bracket Types PASSIVE – Passive self-ligating braces, such as Damon Braces and Damon Clear Braces, feature a unique design. Within the brackets, there is a predetermined lumen size, and the door functions as an additional wall within this space. As treatment progresses, drName utilizes a series of progressively larger wires that gradually fill the lumen. This process facilitates the movement of teeth to their desired positions. The passive self-ligating mechanism ensures a smooth and efficient orthodontic journey, promoting effective tooth alignment with the aid of the specialized wires. ACTIVE – Active self-ligating braces employ a clip as the door mechanism, which actively exerts pressure on the wire, particularly when using larger wires. While the progression of the wires remains consistent, the active mechanism pushes the wire further into the bracket as the wire size increases. This continuous pressure facilitates the desired movement of teeth, ensuring effective alignment throughout the orthodontic treatment process. By utilizing active self-ligating braces, we can optimize the wire-bracket interaction, resulting in efficient tooth adjustments and improved treatment outcomes. ## Clear Self-Ligating Braces Experience the cutting-edge innovation of Damon Braces self-ligating braces, revolutionizing orthodontic treatment. With tie-less brackets and advanced archwires, these braces not only move teeth faster but also provide enhanced comfort. You can enjoy the reliability of metal braces combined with the utmost efficiency and effectiveness of the latest technology. At practiceName, we take pride in offering Damon Clear Braces, which seamlessly blend the advantages of self-ligating braces with the discreetness of clear orthodontic treatment. Damon Clear Braces utilize a unique slide mechanism instead of the traditional bracket and tie system. This mechanism allows the archwires to move freely within the brackets, significantly reducing friction and binding. As a result, your teeth can move more swiftly and comfortably. With Damon Clear Braces, you can embrace the transformative power of orthodontic treatment while enjoying a discreet appearance. ### What Can Damon Clear Do For You? Better aesthetics – Say goodbye to a mouth full of metal with Damon Clear braces. These clear braces are incredibly discreet, ensuring that no one will even realize you’re wearing braces. Their transparent appearance makes them blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Furthermore, Damon Clear braces are highly resistant to staining and discoloration, as they do not utilize O-ties. You can enjoy the confidence of undergoing orthodontic treatment without the worry of noticeable braces or discoloration concerns. Potentially faster treatment times – Experience the freedom of a metal-free smile transformation with Damon Clear braces. These remarkable clear braces provide exceptional discretion, allowing you to undergo orthodontic treatment without drawing attention. Their transparent appearance seamlessly blends with your natural teeth, providing a nearly invisible solution. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, Damon Clear braces are highly resistant to staining and discoloration, thanks to their O-tie-free design. With Damon Clear, you can confidently embark on your orthodontic journey, knowing that your braces will remain inconspicuous and resistant to unsightly discoloration. Increased comfort – Experience the comfort of Damon Clear braces, featuring tie-less brackets that eliminate the need for frequent tightening. With tie-less brackets, these braces apply less friction on the teeth, resulting in a remarkably comfortable orthodontic experience. At practiceName, we prioritize your comfort, and Damon Clear braces provide a gentle and smooth treatment process, allowing you to enjoy your journey to a beautiful smile with minimal discomfort. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BRACES ## Do metal braces work better than clear aligners? Different types of braces, including metal braces (traditional), clear braces (Symetri), self-ligating metal braces (Damon), and behind-the-teeth braces (Inbrace), have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. drName will offer personalized guidance on which type of braces will be most efficient for your specific situation during your consultation. ## Do metal braces work faster than clear aligners? The cost of metal braces can vary based on factors such as age at treatment, the type of metal braces (traditional or self-ligating), surgical options, and the severity of the malocclusion. At practiceName, we provide a complimentary consultation where we will discuss the cost and financial options available to you. ## Does insurance cover metal braces? Most PPO dental plans offer benefits for braces, and we will work closely with you to maximize your insurance benefits and ensure you have a clear understanding of any associated costs before beginning treatment. ## Are Damon Braces and Damon Clear self-ligating braces as effective as traditional metal braces? Yes, Damon Braces and Damon Clear self-ligating braces are just as efficient and effective as regular metal braces. In fact, these self-ligating braces often offer the advantage of shorter treatment times due to their reduced friction in the overall system. This can result in a faster and more efficient orthodontic treatment experience. At practiceName, we offer Damon Braces and Damon Clear self-ligating braces as excellent options for achieving optimal results in a timely manner. ## Do Damon Braces have a noticeable appearance compared to traditional metal braces? Damon Braces are designed to be smaller and less noticeable than other types of metal braces, providing a more aesthetically pleasing orthodontic experience. The sleek and compact design of Damon Braces ensures a more subtle and discreet look while still delivering effective orthodontic treatment. Some parents may question this timing because most kids haven’t even lost all their baby teeth by that age, wondering if orthodontists are just trying to make a buck.  This is not the case an early orthodontic evaluation is crucial because it allows the orthodontist to identify and address potential issues while the child’s jaw is still growing. Timely intervention can help guide proper tooth alignment and jaw development, leading to better long-term oral health and potentially avoiding more extensive treatments in the future. Our goal is to help patients achieve their best smiles, and sometimes early orthodontic intervention is the ideal plan. ## What is Two Phase Orthodontic Treatment? Orthodontic treatment is not just for teenagers anymore. According to the Two-phase orthodontic treatment involves dividing the overall orthodontic treatment into two distinct phases. The first phase, during childhood, focuses on addressing specific orthodontic issues and guiding facial growth. The second phase, during adolescence, aims to achieve optimal tooth alignment and bite. By dividing treatment into two phases, orthodontists can address skeletal and dental issues separately and strategically, resulting in long-lasting oral health, functional occlusion, and an aesthetically pleasing smile. This approach allows for early intervention, reduced need for invasive procedures, and optimal results in terms of both function and appearance. ## Phase One Phase 1 of two-phase orthodontic treatment, also known as the early or interceptive phase, typically begins during childhood, usually around the age of 7 to 9. This phase focuses on addressing specific orthodontic issues and guiding the growth and development of the face, jaws, and teeth. The primary goal of Phase 1 treatment is to create a favorable environment for the eruption of permanent teeth and correct any skeletal discrepancies that may be present. Our aim to address problems such as overcrowding, crossbites, underbites, overbites, or dental protrusions during this early phase. Orthodontic appliances are commonly used in Phase 1 treatment to address these issues. These appliances can include braces, expanders, or space maintainers, among others. They are designed to guide the growth and alignment of the jaws and promote proper positioning of erupting teeth. By intervening early in childhood, we can take advantage of the natural growth and development of the face and jaws to correct skeletal imbalances. This approach can lead to better facial aesthetics, improved function, and a more stable foundation for future orthodontic treatment. Phase 1 treatment is beneficial because it allows orthodontists to address skeletal discrepancies and guide facial growth before all the permanent teeth have erupted. This early intervention can often minimize the need for more invasive procedures or tooth extractions later on. It can also help create a more harmonious balance between the jaws and other facial structures, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. It’s important to note that Phase 1 treatment is not necessary for all children. At our orthodontics office in Mesa we will evaluate each patient individually to determine if early intervention is needed based on their specific orthodontic needs and growth patterns. The decision to undergo Phase 1 treatment is based on the orthodontist’s expertise and the unique circumstances of each patient. ## Phase Two Phase 2 of two-phase orthodontic treatment, also known as the comprehensive or corrective phase, occurs after the majority of permanent teeth have erupted, typically during adolescence. This phase focuses on fine-tuning the alignment of the teeth and achieving an ideal bite and smile. In Phase 2 treatment, our aim to address any remaining tooth misalignments or bite issues that were not fully corrected during Phase 1. The primary objective is to achieve optimal occlusion, where the upper and lower teeth fit together correctly, allowing for proper function and bite stability. Braces or other orthodontic appliances are commonly used in Phase 2 treatment to apply gentle forces to the teeth, guiding them into their ideal positions. These appliances can include traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, or clear aligners, depending on the specific needs and preferences of the patient. Throughout Phase 2, drName will monitor the progress of tooth movement and make adjustments as necessary to ensure that the teeth are aligning properly. Regular check-ups and adjustments are scheduled to ensure that treatment progresses effectively. The duration of Phase 2 treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the individual patient’s response to orthodontic forces. It can typically range from several months to a few years. By completing Phase 2 treatment, patients can achieve not only straighter teeth but also an improved bite, enhanced facial aesthetics, and better overall oral health. The alignment of the teeth and jaws is optimized, resulting in a smile that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. It’s important to note that Phase 2 treatment builds upon the foundation established during Phase 1. The early intervention and guidance of facial growth provided in Phase 1 set the stage for successful Phase 2 treatment by addressing skeletal imbalances and creating an optimal environment for tooth alignment. We carefully plan and coordinate Phase 1 and Phase 2 treatment to ensure that the overall orthodontic goals are met. By dividing treatment into distinct phases, orthodontists can address both skeletal and dental issues strategically, resulting in long-term stability and a confident smile for their patients. ## What are common Phase One treatments? Phase One gives drName the ability to begin keeping orthodontic records for your child. This may consist of X-rays, photographs, and teeth models, which all help drName determine if early intervention will be helpful. It also allows drName to recommend types of appliances, frequency of visits, and treatment duration. During Phase One, the goal is typically not achieving perfectly straight teeth; instead, Phase One focuses on preparing the jaws for the eruption of adult teeth. Patients in this young age group have both baby teeth and adult teeth, which is an ideal time to correct teeth overcrowding and bite issues. Phase One treatment may also protect teeth from damage like chipping, because protruding teeth can be moved into more appealing and safer positions. ## What happens in Phase Two? The second phase of treatment ensures every tooth is in the best position related to other teeth, lips, cheeks and tongue. This provides for proper function and appearance. This phase usually starts once most or all adult teeth have erupted and the 12-year molars are near eruption. Phase Two can begin as early as age 11 and may be performed throughout a patient’s teen or adult years. Typically, Phase Two involves wearing both upper and lower braces and treatment lasts an average of 18-24 months. Patients are fitted with retainers after braces to help ensure their new smile lasts. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TWO PHASE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT ## What if we skip early treatment? Delaying treatment may mean more extensive and invasive treatments in the future. It can also eliminate the ability of the orthodontist to fully repair the patient’s smile. Early treatment is sometimes the best way to obtain the ideal, long-lasting desired results. ## At what age to kids begin Phase One treatment? Phase One treatment is recommended in about 10-20% of orthodontic cases, typically occurring between the ages of 7 to 11. Treatment usually lasts 10-14 months. drName will fit most patients with a retainer to wear until Phase Two begins. ## What is the resting period? If a retainer has been recommended, it should be worn during this time as the patient’s remaining adult teeth erupt. In some cases, retainers are not used so that there is greater freedom of movement for erupting teeth. Phase One should have created room for new teeth to grown in correctly however, avoiding impacted or severely displaced teeth. Some patients may need certain baby teeth removed to enhance adult teeth eruption during the resting period. Periodic checkups will be done by drName during this time to monitor patient progress. It’s important to remember that teeth are not in the final positions after Phase One treatment, as Phase Two will achieve the ending results. ## Can two-phase orthodontic treatment help with speech and breathing issues? Yes, two-phase treatment can address certain speech and breathing issues related to dental and skeletal abnormalities. By guiding facial growth and correcting underlying structural problems, we can improve airway function and enhance speech patterns for optimal oral health and overall well-being. ## Is it necessary for all children to undergo Phase One treatment? No, not all children require Phase One treatment. Each child is unique, and our orthodontic team will evaluate their specific needs to determine if early intervention is necessary. Factors such as dental development, jaw growth patterns, and bite alignment will be considered to determine the best course of treatment. ## Can Phase One treatment prevent the need for tooth extractions in the future? Yes, Phase One treatment can often create sufficient space for permanent teeth to erupt naturally, reducing the likelihood of tooth extractions later on. Early intervention can guide proper dental alignment and prevent overcrowding, helping to maintain a harmonious smile without the need for more invasive procedures. ## Will my child need to wear braces in both Phase One and Phase Two? The need for braces in each phase depends on the specific orthodontic needs of your child. While Phase One treatment focuses on jaw growth and creating space, Phase Two primarily addresses tooth alignment. Therefore, it is common for patients to wear braces or other orthodontic appliances in Phase Two to achieve the desired final results. ## Can Phase One treatment correct thumb-sucking or other oral habits? Yes, Phase One treatment can address and help correct harmful oral habits such as thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting. By intervening early, we can guide proper oral development, discourage these habits, and promote healthy dental and facial growth. ## How long does the resting period typically last between Phase One and Phase Two? The length of the resting period can vary depending on the individual patient’s dental development. During this time, the remaining adult teeth are allowed to erupt naturally. It typically lasts until most or all adult teeth have erupted and the patient is ready for Phase Two treatment. ## Is there an orthodontist near me in Mesa that offers Two Phase Orthodontic Treatment? What is an orthodontist --- ## Why Clear Aligners? - Mesa Orthodontist Source: /treatments/why-clear-aligners/ An unappealing smile can be upsetting for lots of reasons. Crooked teeth may make you self-conscious, as well as increase your risk for gum disease, tooth decay, uneven tooth wear, and jaw pain. Metal braces have long been an effective way to correct orthodontic problems, but this solution can be undesirable for many patients. At practiceName in Mesa, drName offers a fantastic alternative to traditional braces: clear aligners. ## Traditional braces: Traditional braces are made up of brackets, bands, and archwires that fill your mouth with metal. The brackets are bonded to your teeth to remain in place throughout treatment, and the bands attach to your back teeth hold the archwires in place. The archwires run across all your teeth, attached to the brackets by elastic O-rings. The job of the wires is to move and stabilize your teeth. In some patients, additional elements are used like rubber bands and springs to aid in the effectiveness of treatment. Successful for teens through adults, metal braces do their job but can be an embarrassing nuisance. Instead of turning away from orthodontics to avoid traditional braces, clear aligners have become a go-to solution for many patients. ### Clear aligners: There are no metal pieces in clear aligners. The clear plastic trays sit over your teeth comfortably to gradually move them into better positions. The aligners are custom-made by drName using 3D virtual impressions of your mouth. This highly advanced method ensures a good, comfortable, and secure fit for the aligners throughout your treatment. Since they are not bonded to your teeth, patients may remove the aligners as desired. ## Process: You won’t just get one set of aligners for the whole treatment process. drName will provide you with a series of aligner sets that you’ll progress through over time. Each set is designed to be worn for about two weeks, and then you’ll switch to the next set in the series. The hard plastic gradually shifts your teeth, so each aligner set is slightly different as they continue to transform your smile. The aligners place pressure on your teeth, which in turn pressures the periodontal ligaments that hold your teeth in place. The ligaments loosen and the aligners guide your teeth into better positions, and then holds them there while they stabilize. The aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours every day to give you the best results in the shortest time. ### High tech: The clear aligner process is completely computerized, eliminating the unpredictability associated with traditional braces. The digital images taken by drName of your mouth are used to develop your customized aligners using computer software. The software even allows you to see the how your treatment plan will play out, allowing you to see your treatment at every stage. You’ll know what your smile will look like at the end of treatment! ### Visibility: Metal braces may not be a hindrance for some patients, but others would like to avoid the visibility of orthodontic treatment. This is especially true with older teens and adults. Clear aligners solve that problem because they are nearly invisible in your mouth. Your confidence will soar when you undergo treatment without others even realizing it. ## Diet restrictions: Traditional braces have lots of restrictions on what you should eat so that you don’t damage the wires and brackets. It’s a big hassle when you break a wire or dislodge a bracket – and you may even delay your treatment progress – so sticking with the recommended diet is important. Since they are removeable, there are no limitations on what you can eat or drink with clear aligners. You can enjoy your normal diet because you’ll remove the aligners every time you eat. ### Oral health: You should brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss once a day for good oral health. When wearing traditional braces, hygiene becomes a big challenge to work around all that metal and ensure that your teeth and gums are free from food debris and plaque buildup. You don’t have to worry about these concerns as much with clear aligners. You’ll remove them to perform your normal hygiene routine, and then clean the aligners with a toothbrush and toothpaste before replacing them in your mouth. Being able to continue with normal hygiene tasks reduces your risk of cavities and gum disease. Another advantage is that clear aligners don’t have the risk for developing white spots on your teeth, which is a hazard with traditional braces if cleaning is not sufficient. You can also avoid the risks of uneven tooth wear and jaw pain by not grinding your teeth, as clear aligners cover your teeth like a mouth guard would and protect you from the effects of teeth grinding. ### Comfort: Clear aligners eliminate some of the complaints about discomfort associated with traditional braces. There are no wire tightenings that cause pain each time. You might feel slight pressure when you switch to a new set of aligners, but it’s mild and dissipates quickly. The biocompatible plastic of the aligners does not irritate your mouth, making a comfortable experience. You also don’t have to deal with wires poking your gums or rough metal brackets causing irritation. ## Activities: Playing sports is no problem with aligners because you can remove them and put in a regular sports mouth guard as desired. Wearing a mouth guard is absolutely necessary with traditional braces to protect yourself from injuries, which can be difficult to fit comfortably over braces. ### Treatment time: You can expect a good 12 to 24 months (or more) for traditional braces to fully transform your smile. Every four weeks or so you’ll have to visit the office for an adjustment, which adds up to lots of visits to the orthodontist. Your overall treatment time with clear aligners is shorter, typically ranging from 9 to 15 months. Although each patient is different, most see results in less than one year. Also, you only need to visit practiceName every 6 to 10 weeks, leaving you with more time to enjoy your daily activities. --- ## Why Damon Braces? - Mesa Orthodontist Source: /treatments/why-damon-braces/ Traditional braces have long offered patients a way to obtain a beautiful smile. Wearing braces is not all fun and games though, as they can be uncomfortable, inconvenient, and time-consuming. Damon braces brings a modern element to traditional braces, and drName at practiceName in Mesa is pleased to offer this alternative to patients as they seek a better smile. ## What are traditional braces? The metal braces you’ve seen people wearing for years consists of brackets, bands, and wires that are used to pull teeth into better positions and improve your bite. Traditional braces have several negative characteristics, including pain after adjustments, frequent office visits, and a process of two years or longer. As the popularity of improving smiles has increased, so has the desire for options that offer faster results, less discomfort, fewer office visits, and less visibility. ### Do I need braces? There are a number of factors drName looks for during an examination that might indicate braces are warranted: - Overcrowded – One of the most common complaints among patients, a lack of sufficient space in the mouth can lead to overcrowded teeth. They may be overlapping or pushed forward, making it difficult to brush and floss appropriately. - Overbite – When the upper arch sticks out over the lower arch more than it should, an overbite occurs. Excessive overbites can increase risk of tooth trauma from an injury or fall. - Underbite – The opposite condition when the lower arch protrudes over the upper arch when the jaw is closed, an underbite occurs and can make the jaw disproportionate. Chewing may be difficult, and the face sometimes looks older than the person really is. - Open bite – If the top and bottom front teeth don’t touch when the mouth is closed, an open bite occurs that may make it hard to breathe correctly and cause speech problems. - Crossbite – If an upper tooth falls behind a lower tooth when the mouth is closed, it’s called a crossbite. Severe tooth wear, excessive gum recession, or asymmetric jaw growth can result. ## What are Damon braces? The biggest difference between Damon braces and traditional ones is that Damon braces are self-litigating (or self-tightening). This means that drName does not need to frequently adjust your braces to tighten the wires; they tighten themselves by a sliding mechanism attached to each bracket. The mechanism gradually moves continuously, pulling your teeth into better positions. Your teeth realign and your bite improves at a faster pace than traditional braces due to this feature. ### What is memory wire? A memory wire is another element that makes Damon braces unique. The sliding brackets are attached to this wire, and as the wire works to return to its normal length, it pulls your teeth along with it. It also allows your jaw to expand and therefore, pull your palate into better position as well. The memory wire reduces the pressure that you feel on your teeth that is common with traditional braces. The lower amount of force means less discomfort for patients. ## What are the benefits of Damon braces? In addition to the increased comfort brought about by the self-litigating system, there are fewer visits to practiceName since the wires don’t require adjustments. Damon braces don’t require elastics, which are known for being noticeable in smiles, and even offers clear brackets to make your braces less visible. Overall treatment time is reduced as a result of the continuous movement produced by Damon braces. ### How are Damon braces attached? The first step is having a thorough exam and cleaning by your dentist to ensure your mouth is healthy. Then you’ll have an appointment with drName to assess your condition, take X-rays, and discuss your desires so that a treatment plan may be created. If you proceed with Damon braces, you’ll undergo the painless process of placing the brackets. You may choose between metal or clear brackets. They will be firmly bonded to your teeth and then the memory wire is placed into the clasping system. You may experience some minor discomfort the first few days, but overall you can expect much less pain than with traditional braces. ## What are some common questions about Damon braces? - Are Damon braces used on adults? Yes, both adults and adolescents can benefit from this treatment. - Will I have pain after adjustments? Discomfort is considerably less with Damon braces, and adjustments are much less frequent. - Do faster results mean harsher treatment? No. Treatment is completed more quickly with Damon braces, but it is actually more gentle than other braces. - Are the brackets unsightly and bulky? These brackets are smaller and less conspicuous in your smile, especially if you choose clear brackets. ### How do I care for my Damon braces? Oral care while wearing any type of braces should be done meticulously and consistently. You want to be sure you eliminate food particles that can cause tooth decay. Brush gently while angling your toothbrush toward each bracket, and then floss carefully. It can require some patience to keep your mouth clean, but the end result will be worth it when you’re enjoying your beautiful new smile. --- # Other Pages ## Adult Orthodontics: It's Never Too Late for a Straighter Smile - Mesa Orthodontist Source: /adult-orthodontics-its-never-too-late-for-a-straighter-smile/ Summary: Orthodontist in Mesa for adults # Adult Orthodontics: It’s Never Too Late for a Straighter Smile Orthodontic treatment is often associated with children and teenagers, but the truth is, it’s never too late for adults to achieve a straighter smile. With a range of orthodontic appliances at their disposal, including braces, aligners, and retainers, orthodontists like drName at practiceName in Mesa can effectively address misaligned teeth and jaws, enhance bite function, and ultimately create a smile that is both aesthetically pleasing and healthy. Below are some of the common problems that can be successfully treated with orthodontics: ## Crowding One of the most obvious reasons patients are unhappy with their smiles is teeth that don’t have enough room to grow in and become crowded within their smile. This problem not only can look unappealing, it can cause oral health issues. Teeth that are too close together can be hard to clean completely due to their overlapping  tooth surfaces. ## Spacing The opposite problem to crowding is teeth that are spaced too far apart. There is too much room in the jaw for teeth that are coming in, which can result from missing teeth or could just be a cosmetic problem. ## Upper Front Teeth Protrusion Sometimes the upper front teeth stick out farther than they should. This can be an embarrassing look, plus can make it more difficult for your teeth to function normally. This happens when the upper front teeth stick out too far forward, or the lower front teeth sit further back than they should. ## Overbite In situations where the upper front teeth overlap excessively  over the lower front teeth, the result is called an overbite. Severe overbites can  cause the lower teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth, making it very uncomfortable. Overbites can also lead to lips that stick out too far, gummy smiles, or too much wear on incisor teeth. ## Underbite When the lower jaw sticks further out than it should, it’s called an underbite. The result is lower front teeth that awkwardly sit in front of the upper front teeth. ## Crossbite Another problem that drName sees frequently is a crossbite. When the jaw is closed, the upper teeth rest inside the lower teeth. Various problems are linked to crossbites, including incorrect use of the lower jaw, improper jaw growth, teeth that tip over inappropriately, or the two sides of a person’s face not looking equivalent to one another. ## Openbite If the lower and upper front teeth don’t overlap at all, an openbite is created. This can be caused by undesirable habits like tongue thrusting or thumb sucking. ## Unmatched Dental Midlines When the back portion of the bite doesn’t fit together or match correctly, it’s referred to as unmatched dental midlines. The teeth and jaw may not function as they should when this occurs. ## Start The Process today If you suspect you have any of these common orthodontic problems, call practiceName today to schedule an appointment. You don’t have to go through life with issues like these; help is on the way through braces, aligners, or other orthodontic treatments. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT Common Ortho Problems ## Can orthodontics help with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) issues? With advancements in orthodontic technology, adults can also benefit from braces, aligners, and other orthodontic treatments to correct dental issues and achieve a healthier, more attractive smile. ## Can orthodontics improve speech problems caused by dental misalignments? Yes, dental misalignments can sometimes affect speech clarity. Orthodontic treatment can help correct these misalignments, leading to improved speech and pronunciation. ## Will orthodontic treatment require extractions of teeth? Extractions of teeth are not always necessary for orthodontic treatment. However, in some cases of severe crowding or jaw discrepancies, extractions may be recommended to create the necessary space for proper alignment and bite correction. ## How long does orthodontic treatment typically last? The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the specific treatment plan. On average, treatment can range from one to three years. Regular progress check-ups with the orthodontist will help ensure that the treatment progresses as planned and adjustments are made accordingly. ## Is orthodontic treatment covered by insurance? Both aligners and braces are effective in correcting dental misalignments and achieving a straighter smile. However, they differ in terms of their approach and characteristics. Aligners, often made of clear, removable plastic trays, provide a discreet and flexible option, while braces, consisting of metal or ceramic brackets and wires, offer a more traditional and comprehensive method. Understanding the distinctions between aligners and braces can help you make an informed decision when it comes to choosing the right orthodontic treatment for your needs. ## What Are Braces? and creates a straighter smile. They typically involve metal brackets bonded to the teeth, along with metal bands on the back teeth. An archwire, attached to the brackets using elastic o-rings, applies gentle pressure to shift the teeth into their desired positions. The archwire is periodically changed, with thicker wires used over time to exert greater force. Additional components like rubber bands or springs may be used for specific alignment needs. While traditional braces are visible due to their metal components, there are also more discreet options available, such as ceramic braces with tooth-colored or clear brackets. The primary goal of braces is to guide teeth into proper alignment gradually. Through the application of consistent pressure, the archwire helps shift the teeth and remodel the surrounding bone and tissues. Once the desired alignment is achieved, the archwire aids in stabilizing the teeth to prevent shifting. Ultimately, whether you choose traditional braces or a more inconspicuous alternative, the end result is a confident and beautiful smile. ## What are aligners? Aligners serve as an excellent alternative to traditional braces for individuals seeking a discreet and flexible orthodontic treatment. Made from clear plastic, these virtually invisible aligners offer a more inconspicuous option for teeth alignment. Unlike braces, which consist of brackets and wires, aligners come in the form of removable trays that are custom-made to fit each patient’s unique dental structure. As the treatment progresses, you will receive a set of aligners, typically wearing each tray for about one to two weeks before moving on to the next one in the series. The aligners are strategically designed to exert gradual and controlled force on specific teeth, gently nudging them into better positions over time. This gradual shifting allows for a more comfortable experience compared to the adjustments associated with braces. ## Braces: Pros and Cons Traditional braces have been a popular choice for orthodontic treatment due to their effectiveness and affordability. They provide precise control over the treatment process, allowing Dr. drName to improve smiles successfully. However, one disadvantage is their visibility, which can impact self-esteem, especially for older patients. The bulky components of braces may cause discomfort and irritation in the mouth. Oral hygiene can be challenging, requiring extra care to clean around brackets and wires and prevent plaque buildup. Despite these drawbacks, traditional braces remain a reliable option for achieving a straighter smile. Choosing braces should be based on individual needs and preferences, with guidance from drName. Personalized recommendations can address concerns and optimize the orthodontic experience, ensuring the best outcome for patients. ## Aligners: Pro and Cons There are several symptoms and signs that indicate a root canal may be needed. These include: - Persistent pain: If you experience persistent pain in your tooth, especially when you apply pressure or chew, it could indicate that you need a root canal. - Sensitivity to hot and cold: If your tooth is sensitive to hot and cold temperatures even after the source of the temperature is removed, this could be a sign of root canal problems. If you experience any of these symptoms or signs, it’s important to schedule a consultation with Mesa root canal dentist drName to determine if a root canal is necessary. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ALIGNERS VS. BRACES ## How do aligners and braces differ in terms of treatment duration? The treatment duration with aligners and braces can vary based on the complexity of the case. In general, braces are typically worn for an average of 18 to 36 months, while aligner treatment can range from a few months to over a year, depending on the specific alignment needs. ## Can aligners or braces fix bite issues? Both aligners and braces can address certain types of bite issues. However, traditional braces are generally more versatile and effective in treating complex bite problems, such as severe overbites or underbites. Aligners are better suited for mild to moderate bite irregularities. ## Are there any age restrictions for aligners or braces? There are no strict age restrictions for either aligners or braces. Both treatment options can be utilized by individuals of different age groups, including children, teenagers, and adults. The suitability of each option will depend on the specific dental needs and consultation with drName. ## Can aligners be lost or damaged easily? Aligners should be treated with care to avoid loss or damage. While they are removable, it’s important to keep them in a safe place when not in use. If an aligner is lost or damaged, it is advisable to contact drName promptly to discuss the next steps and potentially obtain a replacement. ## Are there any restrictions on playing sports or musical instruments with aligners or braces? Aligners can be removed during sports activities or playing musical instruments, providing more flexibility and comfort. However, it is important to consult with drName regarding specific guidelines and recommendations to ensure the best protection and functionality during these activities while wearing braces. ## Can aligners be used for teeth whitening or other cosmetic treatments? Aligners are primarily designed for orthodontic purposes to align teeth. However, certain aligner systems may offer additional features, such as teeth whitening. It is recommended to discuss any cosmetic goals or desires with drName to explore suitable options and ensure a comprehensive treatment plan. ## How often are follow-up appointments necessary with aligners or braces? Regular follow-up appointments are essential for both aligners and braces. With aligners, you will typically have check-ups every 4 to 6 weeks to monitor progress and receive new aligner trays. For braces, appointments are usually scheduled every 4 to 8 weeks for adjustments and monitoring of the treatment progress. These appointments allow drName to assess the treatment’s effectiveness and make any necessary modifications to ensure optimal results. ## Is there an orthodontist near me in Mesa that offers aligner or dental braces? While braces have traditionally been associated with younger individuals, their popularity among adults is steadily increasing. In fact, approximately one million Americans aged 18 and above wear braces to enhance their smiles. At practiceName in Mesa, drName is delighted to provide braces to patients of all age groups. Perhaps you are aiming for a new job or promotion and desire a more appealing smile to boost your confidence. Maybe you have been procrastinating for years, but now you have run out of excuses and are ready to prioritize your dental health. Alternatively, it could be that your teeth have shifted out of alignment with age, and you have come to realize that your smile is no longer as vibrant as it used to be. Regardless of the reasons, achieving a smile makeover is entirely within your grasp if you are an adult considering dental braces. Moreover, the benefits extend far beyond mere appearance. Misaligned teeth can have detrimental effects on your oral health, potentially leading to issues such as tooth decay, cavities, uneven enamel wear, gum disease, or even jaw pain. By straightening your smile, you not only enhance your aesthetic appeal but also safeguard your overall dental well-being. Embracing dental braces as an adult offers a transformative opportunity to correct long-standing dental concerns, improve your self-esteem, and ensure long-term oral health. Don’t let age be a barrier to achieving the beautiful smile you deserve. With the advancements in orthodontic techniques and the growing popularity of adult orthodontics, it is never too late to embark on a journey towards a straighter, healthier smile. ## Are braces different for adults? While the benefits of braces for adults align with those for younger patients, there are a few key distinctions to consider. Adult orthodontic treatment takes into account specific factors that may affect the overall process and outcomes. Here’s what sets adult braces apart: Addressing Gum Disease: Compared to younger individuals, adults have a higher susceptibility to gum disease. Before braces can be applied, it is crucial to address and treat any existing gum disease to ensure a healthy foundation for orthodontic treatment. drName will carefully evaluate the condition of your gums and develop a comprehensive plan to address any gum disease before proceeding with braces. Considering Previous Tooth Extractions: If you have had tooth extractions in the past, it becomes essential for drName to assess the suitability of those extraction sites for teeth to be repositioned in that particular area of the mouth. The presence of prior extractions may impact the treatment plan, requiring additional considerations and adjustments to achieve the desired results effectively. Higher Risk of Root Resorption: Root resorption refers to the breakdown or shortening of the tooth roots during the movement process. Adults may have a slightly higher risk of root resorption compared to adolescents. drName will closely monitor your progress throughout the treatment to minimize any potential complications and ensure the stability of your teeth in their new positions. Harder and Non-Growing Adult Bones: Adult bones are harder and no longer growing, which can influence the movement of teeth. As a result, teeth may need additional time to adjust and settle into their new locations. Adult orthodontic treatment often requires a longer duration compared to adolescents, typically ranging from 18 months to 3 years. Patience and consistent follow-up visits are crucial to achieving optimal results. Despite these differences, adult braces offer the same potential benefits as braces for younger patients. They can improve the alignment and appearance of your teeth, enhance your bite functionality, and contribute to better oral health. By working closely with drName and following a personalized treatment plan, you can navigate the unique considerations of adult orthodontics and achieve a beautiful, stable smile that lasts a lifetime. ## Aren’t braces embarrassing for adults? It’s natural to have concerns about the potential embarrassment of wearing braces as an adult. However, rest assured that drName at practiceName understands your apprehensions and offers a range of orthodontic options specifically designed to address such concerns. Here’s how you can achieve a straighter smile discreetly: Ceramic Braces: If you desire a less noticeable alternative to traditional metal braces, ceramic braces can be an excellent choice. These braces function similarly to traditional braces but are made of a clear or tooth-colored material. This allows them to blend in more seamlessly with your teeth, making them significantly less noticeable. With ceramic braces, you can correct misalignment discreetly while still achieving the desired orthodontic results. Invisalign Clear Aligners: For those seeking the utmost discretion during their orthodontic treatment, Invisalign clear plastic aligners offer an exceptional solution. Invisalign utilizes a series of virtually invisible aligners that are custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth. These aligners gradually and gently shift your teeth into their desired positions. One of the major advantages of Invisalign is that they are removable, allowing you to maintain your regular oral hygiene routine and enjoy your favorite foods without any restrictions. By opting for ceramic braces or Invisalign, you can align your teeth effectively while minimizing the visible impact on your smile. These discreet options provide a sense of confidence and allow you to go about your daily activities without feeling self-conscious about wearing braces as an adult. At practiceName, drName is committed to providing you with a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and preferences. During your consultation, you can discuss your concerns openly, and drName will guide you towards the most suitable orthodontic option for your situation. Many adults choose to invest in orthodontic treatment to improve their dental health, boost their self-confidence, and achieve a smile they can be proud of. Embrace the discreet orthodontic options available and take the first step towards a confident, beautiful smile that reflects your true self. ## What is life like with braces? It may take some adjusting to your new braces at first. You’ll need to get used to eating and speaking with them, and you will likely experience some discomfort as your teeth move into better positions. You can also expect dietary restrictions to avoid damaging your braces. Some foods to avoid are hard candies, sticky foods, hard pretzels, corn on the cob, popcorn, ice, crusty bread, and crunchy fruits and vegetables. Another adjustment is taking extra care with oral hygiene tasks, since food particles can lodge in your braces and increase your cavity risk. Regular and meticulous brushing, flossing, and mouthwash use is necessary. Proper oral hygiene helps avoid white spots that sometimes occur on teeth after braces. drName will provide all the instructions necessary for you to have a successful experience with your adult braces. Once you get the hang of it, a beautiful smile is within your reach! ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BRACES FOR ADULTS ## Can I get braces as an adult if I have missing teeth? Yes, adults with dental implants can still benefit from orthodontic treatment. Dr. drName will evaluate your situation and work closely with your implant dentist to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that takes your implants into consideration. While there may be certain dietary adjustments needed during orthodontic treatment, you can still enjoy most of your favorite foods. However, it is advisable to avoid hard, sticky, or excessively chewy foods that can potentially damage the braces or prolong the treatment process. drName will provide you with a list of recommended foods and instructions on how to maintain good oral hygiene during your treatment. ## Will wearing braces as an adult affect my speech? Initially, wearing braces may slightly affect your speech as you adjust to the presence of the orthodontic appliances. However, with practice and time, any speech difficulties will typically resolve on their own. Your tongue and oral muscles will adapt, and you will be able to speak clearly and confidently with braces. ## Can I participate in sports or play musical instruments while wearing braces? Yes, you can still participate in sports and play musical instruments while wearing braces. However, it is important to wear a mouthguard during physical activities to protect your teeth and braces from potential injuries. This growth process typically continues until their late teens. It is during these crucial developmental stages that it becomes particularly advantageous to assess the alignment and positioning of their teeth and jaws. By addressing problems such as improper bites, misaligned teeth, and related oral health issues, we can greatly impact their future adult lives. At practiceName in Mesa, drName is prepared to assist young individuals with orthodontic treatments before their growth is fully finished. ## Early Intervention Early intervention in orthodontics refers to the practice of evaluating a child’s oral health, teeth, and jaws at a young age to identify potential problems and determine if early treatment can prevent or mitigate issues that may arise later in life. During childhood and early adolescence, the jaw undergoes significant development, accompanied by the growth of muscles and other oral structures. Sometimes, this growth process can lead to abnormalities or malocclusions, such as an incorrect bite or misalignment of the teeth. Early intervention involves proactively assessing the child’s dental and skeletal development to identify any such issues. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. At this stage, some permanent teeth have erupted, and the orthodontist can assess the child’s dental and skeletal alignment, jaw growth patterns, and identify any early signs of potential problems. During an early intervention appointment with drName, various factors are examined to determine if treatment is necessary. This includes assessing the bite alignment, looking for signs of protruding front teeth, checking for overcrowding or insufficient space for teeth to erupt properly, and evaluating the overall harmony and balance of the oral structures. If any issues are identified during the evaluation, drName will recommend a customized treatment plan tailored to the child’s specific needs. The goal of early intervention is to address orthodontic concerns at an early stage, taking advantage of the child’s ongoing growth and development. By intervening early, it is possible to guide the natural growth processes and potentially avoid more complex or invasive treatments in the future. Early orthodontic treatment can include various approaches such as the use of braces, aligners, expanders, or other orthodontic appliances. These treatments are designed to gradually align the teeth, correct the bite, improve facial aesthetics, and create a harmonious balance between the teeth, jaws, and facial structures. By addressing orthodontic issues early on, the chances of achieving a beautiful smile and optimal oral health in the future are significantly improved. Early intervention not only focuses on the aesthetics of a child’s smile but also plays a crucial role in promoting proper oral function, which can have long-term benefits for overall dental health and self-confidence. It’s important to consult with a Mesa orthodontist like drName to assess your child’s individual needs and determine the most appropriate treatment options. With timely intervention, you can give your child the best chance for a healthy and confident smile as they continue to grow and develop. ## What is the point before permanent teeth are in place? During the phase before permanent teeth are fully in place, which usually occurs around the age of 7, early intervention plays a crucial role in obtaining a comprehensive understanding of a child’s oral condition. Even though baby teeth are still present at this stage, an early intervention evaluation by drName offers a complete assessment of the child’s oral health, including hidden developments beneath the gums. This in-depth analysis provides valuable insights into what the future holds for the child’s oral development as they continue to grow. By examining the child’s oral condition before the eruption of permanent teeth, drName can detect and identify any existing or potential problems that may arise during their dental and skeletal growth. This proactive approach enables the orthodontist to provide timely preventive or interceptive treatment recommendations, often minimizing the extent of future orthodontic interventions. ## What is the best age for braces? The optimal age for braces treatment can vary depending on the individual circumstances of each child. While there is a general guideline that braces treatment often commences between the ages of 11 and 13, it is important to note that the best age for braces is ultimately determined by drName based on a thorough assessment of your child’s specific condition. One of the key factors considered when determining the appropriate age for braces is the stage of dental development. Waiting until the ages of 11 to 13 is typically advantageous as it allows for the replacement of baby teeth with permanent teeth. At this stage, most or all of the permanent teeth have erupted, providing a more stable foundation for orthodontic treatment. However, it is important to acknowledge that each child’s dental development progresses at their own pace. Some children may experience early eruption or delayed eruption of permanent teeth, which can affect the timing of braces treatment. drName will carefully evaluate your child’s dental growth and development to determine the most effective and suitable age for initiating braces. In addition to dental development, other factors that influence the timing of braces include the nature and complexity of the orthodontic issues. Some orthodontic problems may benefit from early intervention during childhood, while others may be more effectively addressed during the adolescent years when most growth has occurred. drName will consider these factors, along with your child’s overall oral health and specific treatment needs, to determine the best age for braces. It is important to remember that braces treatment is a highly personalized process, and the age at which it begins can vary from patient to patient. The primary goal is to start treatment at a time when the teeth and jaws are receptive to orthodontic adjustments, ensuring the most favorable and efficient outcomes. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BRACES ## What is the significance of early orthodontic intervention? They are on their way to a healthier, more beautiful smile. During the time your child wears braces, it’s important to follow basic guidelines for caring for both the braces and teeth. In the first few days after getting braces, your child may experience tenderness in their teeth. This is a normal part of the treatment process, and the discomfort will quickly fade. It’s actually a positive sign that the teeth are starting to move. Meanwhile, it’s never too early to start practicing good oral hygiene and making adjustments to daily habits to protect your child’s teeth and mouth while the braces do their job. The sooner your child adopts these tips for caring for braces and establishes healthy habits, the better their teeth and mouth will be in the long run. ## Brushing When it comes to brushing while wearing braces, it is recommended to adhere to the two-by-two routine: brush twice a day for two minutes each time. Opt for fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush. Prior to brushing, ensure that your child removes any rubber bands or other removable accessories. Then, proceed with the following steps. For a duration of two minutes, start on the upper teeth and, using a gentle circular motion, gradually move the toothbrush across each tooth. Encourage your child to ensure that the brush reaches below the wires, thoroughly cleaning both the areas above and below the braces. Once they have completed this for all the upper teeth, shift their focus to the lower teeth and repeat the process. ## Floss and Mouthwash Due to the limitations of a toothbrush in reaching every crevice and gap between teeth, it is important for your child to incorporate daily flossing into their oral hygiene routine. To effectively clean between each tooth and eliminate any food particles missed by the toothbrush, they should use a threader or another flossing aid. After brushing and flossing, it is essential to remind them to rinse with mouthwash, as it can reach and address any stubborn areas requiring extra care. ## Waterpik While oral irrigators like the Water Pik cannot fully substitute traditional flossing, they can serve as a valuable addition to your oral hygiene routine when wearing braces. Incorporating an oral irrigator may require some initial practice to become comfortable with its usage, but once integrated into your daily routine, many patients find it highly beneficial. Oral irrigators can effectively assist in eliminating stubborn food particles that may have been missed by the toothbrush and floss, making them a great tool for maintaining oral health with braces. ## Look in the mirror After following the steps, telll your child to check out their smile in front of a mirror. They should carefully examine their teeth to ensure there are no lingering or unnoticed food particles. It is also important to check for any wires that may be protruding or misaligned. Regularly inspecting the braces is advantageous as it enables prompt identification of issues, allowing them to notify the orthodontist if something appears amiss. Once they have inspected both the upper and lower braces, they can proceed to reattach any elastic bands or removable accessories they had removed prior to brushing. Schedule an Appointment --- ## Early Orthodontics - Mesa Orthodontist Source: /education-center/early-orthodontics-mesa/ Home » Education Center » Early Orthodontics # Early Orthodontics? First Visit | Early Intervention | Benefits of Treatment | No Braces Later | FAQ about Orthodontics Parents prioritize their children’s long-lasting, healthy, and captivating smiles. One effective strategy to accomplish this objective is by initiating their orthodontic journey at an early age through a visit to the orthodontist. By introducing children to drName at practiceName in Mesa, parents can guarantee that their little ones receive the highest quality orthodontic care. To shed light on this early orthodontic treatment, also known as early intervention, let’s explore some frequently asked questions along with their corresponding answers. ## When is the ideal time for a child’s first visit to the orthodontist? According to the American Association of Orthodontists, the recommended age for a child’s initial orthodontic screening is seven. This crucial milestone allows the orthodontist to assess the child’s oral development and determine if orthodontic treatment will be necessary in the future, as well as identify the optimal time to initiate the treatment. Although comprehensive treatments like braces may not be recommended at this early stage, this initial visit provides valuable insights into what lies ahead and helps set expectations for the future. ## What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment? Some ways that your child can benefit from early intervention include: - Creating room for erupting teeth so they are not crowded - Saving space for unerupted teeth - Reducing the need for tooth extraction - Lowering the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth - Influencing jaw growth to improve facial symmetry - Minimizing future treatment time in braces, which also lessens costs ## Why Early Intervention Early intervention in orthodontic treatment offers a range of benefits, ensuring optimal long-term results while minimizing time and cost. By addressing orthodontic concerns at an early stage, several advantages can be achieved. Firstly, teeth that have not yet erupted can be guided into more favorable positions, while preserving adequate space for their proper eruption. Additionally, early orthodontic treatment enables the guidance of jaw growth, allowing for prediction of the child’s bite development. Furthermore, it facilitates the regulation of the width of the upper and lower dental arches, minimizing the likelihood of future permanent tooth extractions. Early intervention also plays a role in correcting habits like thumb sucking, reducing the risk of impacted permanent teeth, and preventing potential issues with speech or swallowing. ## Is early intervention for all children? Not every child benefits from early intervention, but should see drName by age 7 to determine if waiting until later is the right choice. Some orthodontic problems are more effectively corrected in the teen years, after all permanent teeth are fully erupted. Sometimes skeletal orthodontic issues should be addressed after growth is completed. During an early intervention appointment, drName can create a treatment plan based on your child and go from there. ## Does early intervention mean no braces later? Early intervention means that future severe problems may be avoided and later treatment might be simplified. Since all permanent teeth are not erupted by age 7, their final positions are not fully determined. Therefore, a later phase of treatment during the teen years might be required to move permanent teeth to their very best positions. That later treatment time will typically be shortened though. In some cases, further orthodontic treatment is not necessary at all. Are dentist appointments important during orthodontic treatment? Whether treatment occurs during an early phase, teenage phase, or both, patients should see their dentist for regular checkups and cleanings every 6 months during treatment. Oral hygiene can be more difficult while wearing braces, so your oral health depends on maintaining dental visits. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT EARLY ORTHODONTICS ## Can early orthodontic treatment prevent the need for braces in the future? Early orthodontic treatment aims to address orthodontic issues at their earliest stages. While comprehensive braces may still be required later on, early intervention can help minimize the severity of orthodontic problems, potentially reducing the duration and extent of braces treatment needed in the future. ## Is it necessary for all children to undergo early orthodontic treatment? Early orthodontic treatment is not necessary for all children. However, an evaluation by an orthodontist at a young age can help determine if early intervention is beneficial for a particular child’s orthodontic needs. ## How long does early orthodontic treatment typically last? The duration of early orthodontic treatment varies depending on the specific concerns being addressed. It can range from several months to a couple of years. The orthodontist will provide a personalized treatment plan with an estimated timeline. ## Will my child experience discomfort during early orthodontic treatment? Discomfort levels can vary depending on the type of treatment and individual sensitivity. However, most early orthodontic interventions involve gentle adjustments that may cause some initial soreness or discomfort, which typically subsides within a few days. ## Can early orthodontic treatment affect my child's speech? However, there might be a brief adjustment period as the child adapts to the presence of appliances or minor changes in the oral structures. ## Can my child still play sports or musical instruments while undergoing early orthodontic treatment? Yes, participating in sports and playing musical instruments is generally possible during early orthodontic treatment. However, it is important to discuss any concerns with the orthodontist to ensure necessary precautions are taken to protect the braces or appliances. ## Will my insurance cover early orthodontic treatment? It is recommended to consult with both the orthodontist and insurance company to understand the coverage details and potential out-of-pocket expenses. ## Is there an orthodontist near me in Mesa that offers early orthodontic treatment? It’s important to note that this discomfort is temporary and typically subsides within a few days. Here are some practical strategies to alleviate soreness and promote a more comfortable orthodontic experience: Over-the-counter pain relievers: Non-aspirin pain relievers such as acetaminophen can be effective in reducing the soreness associated with braces. Follow the recommended dosage instructions and consult your orthodontist or pharmacist if you have any concerns. Applying heat therapy: Applying a warm cloth or heating pad to your jaws can provide soothing relief. The gentle warmth helps to relax the jaw muscles and alleviate discomfort. Ensure that the heat is not too hot to avoid any burns, and use it for short periods at a time. Saltwater gargles: Gargling with a mixture of one teaspoon of salt dissolved in an eight-ounce glass of warm water can help alleviate soreness. The saltwater solution has natural anti-inflammatory properties and can provide a soothing effect on the oral tissues. Swish the solution gently in your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. Soft food diet: Consuming soft foods during the initial days after getting braces or adjustments can reduce the strain on your teeth and gums, thus minimizing discomfort. Opt for foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, soups, smoothies, and soft fruits. Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can further aggravate the soreness. Proper oral hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. Brushing and flossing regularly, as instructed by your orthodontist, helps prevent plaque buildup and potential gum irritation. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and gentle, circular motions to clean your teeth and braces effectively. Remember, if the soreness persists for an extended period or becomes increasingly severe, it’s important to out our office for further guidance. We can help assess your situation and provide personalized advice or make adjustments to your treatment plan if necessary. ## Wire Irritations Wire irritations can occasionally occur during orthodontic treatment when wires become displaced and start poking the soft tissues of your mouth. While it can be uncomfortable, there are several steps you can take to address this issue and find relief: Relocating the wire: One simple approach is to use a pencil eraser or a cotton swab to gently push the wire away from the irritated area. This can help temporarily alleviate the discomfort caused by the wire poking the soft tissues. Using dental wax or cotton: If relocating the wire doesn’t provide sufficient relief, you can cover the end of the wire with a small amount of dental wax. Dental wax is a soft, pliable material that creates a protective barrier between the wire and your mouth, reducing irritation. Alternatively, you can use a small piece of cotton, such as a ball or roll, to create a cushioning effect between the wire and the affected area. Trimming the wire: In cases where the wire continues to cause significant discomfort and cannot be easily relocated or covered, you may consider trimming the wire. To do this, ensure that you use clean scissors or nail clippers that have been sterilized with alcohol. Carefully cut the wire as close as possible to the nearest bracket or attachment. However, it’s crucial to consult your orthodontist before attempting any wire trimming on your own, as they can provide guidance and ensure the proper adjustment is made. It’s important to note that while these measures can provide temporary relief, it’s importa to schedule an appointment  as soon as possible to address the underlying issue to reposition or adjust the wire properly, resolving the irritation and ensuring your treatment progresses smoothly. ## Loose Bracket During your orthodontic treatment, it’s not uncommon to encounter a loose bracket. We understand the importance of addressing this issue promptly to ensure your comfort and the success of your treatment. Here’s a helpful guide on what to do: Contact Us: If you notice a loose bracket, it’s crucial to reach out to our orthodontic practice right away. By contacting us, you’ll receive professional guidance on whether the bracket requires immediate repair or if it can wait until your next scheduled appointment.  Cutting the Wire or Removing a Bracket: In certain situations, our orthodontist may advise you to cut the wire or remove the loose bracket to alleviate discomfort and prevent further damage. Should this be necessary, it’s vital to use clean and sterilized nail clippers. Ensure that you wash the clippers thoroughly with soap and warm water, and then sterilize them using rubbing alcohol or another appropriate disinfectant. Exercise caution as you carefully cut the wire or remove the bracket as instructed, avoiding unnecessary pressure or injury. Scheduling a Repair Appointment: Regardless of whether you have temporarily addressed the issue, we highly recommend scheduling a repair appointment as soon as possible with our orthodontist. During this appointment, our skilled team will assess the situation, reattach or replace the bracket, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure the smooth progression of your treatment. If you find yourself in this situation, there are a few steps you can take to address the issue: Contact Us: Reach out to our orthodontic practice and inform us about the lost separator. We can provide guidance on whether immediate replacement is required or if it can be managed until your next scheduled appointment. Assess the situation: If you’re not sure about the urgency of the lost separator, take a moment to inspect the area where it was placed. Look out for any discomfort, noticeable changes in tooth alignment, or other differences. This self-assessment will enable you to provide our orthodontist with additional information when you contact us. Remember, each situation is unique, and the decision to replace a lost separator depends on various factors specific to your treatment. By promptly contacting our orthodontic practice, we’ll be able to provide appropriate instructions tailored to your individual needs. ## Loose Wire Dealing with a loose wire during your orthodontic treatment can be bothersome, but there are steps you can take to manage the situation until you can see the orthodontist. Here’s what you can do: Realigning the wire: If you notice a loose wire, you can try using clean and sterile tweezers to carefully guide it back into its proper position. Gently apply pressure to push the wire back into place, securing it within the brackets. Be cautious and gentle to avoid causing further discomfort or damage. Using dental wax: If you’re unable to reposition the loose wire, dental wax can be a useful temporary solution. Take a small piece of dental wax and mold it around the bothersome wire, creating a protective barrier between the wire and the soft tissues of your mouth. This helps prevent irritation and discomfort caused by the loose wire. Make sure to replace the dental wax as needed to maintain its effectiveness. Cutting the wire: In cases where the loose wire continues to cause significant discomfort and cannot be easily repositioned or covered, you may need to cut it. To do this, use clean and sterile nail clippers. Prior to cutting, wash the clippers thoroughly with soap and warm water, and then sterilize them with rubbing alcohol or an appropriate disinfectant. Carefully cut the wire behind the last bracket where it is securely held. Remember to exercise caution and avoid cutting too close to the bracket to prevent accidental injury. It’s important to note that while these measures can provide temporary relief, it’s important to contact our office and scheduling a repair appointment as soon as possible. We will be able to address the loose wire and make any necessary adjustments to ensure your treatment progresses smoothly and effectively. Brackets | Wires | Metal Bands | Tooth Movement |  FAQ about Orthodontics Braces are commonly used by orthodontists to enhance smiles and address dental concerns. They improve appearance, alleviate eating and speaking difficulties, and tackle oral health issues such as uneven tooth wear, jaw pain, and cavities. Braces also restore confidence in patients with low self-esteem. At practiceName in Mesa, drName expertly utilizes braces to correct smiles and boost self-assurance. How do braces achieve these transformations? ## Brackets: The Foundation of Orthodontic Treatment Dental brackets, the cornerstone of orthodontic treatment, are small, square-shaped devices typically made of metal or ceramic. These brackets play a crucial role in attaching the archwire to the teeth, facilitating the movement necessary for correcting misalignments. Metal brackets are the most commonly used due to their exceptional durability. On the other hand, ceramic brackets offer a tooth-colored appearance that is less noticeable, making them a preferred choice for individuals seeking a more discreet treatment option. To secure the brackets to the teeth, a dental adhesive is applied and then cured using a special light. Generally, the brackets are positioned at the center of each tooth, and the archwire is threaded through them, exerting pressure on the teeth to guide them into proper alignment. Depending on the specific requirements of the patient and the type of orthodontic treatment, brackets can be either self-ligating or require elastic ties to hold the wire in place. In terms of placement, brackets can be designed for either the front or back of the teeth. Traditional braces typically feature brackets affixed to the front of the teeth, while lingual braces have brackets positioned on the back, ensuring a more inconspicuous appearance. ## Wires: The Movers and Shapers Archwires, another fundamental component of braces, are thin, flexible wires that are connected to the dental brackets. These wires apply gentle and gradual pressure to the teeth, guiding them into the desired positions. While stainless steel is the most commonly used material for archwires, other options such as nickel-titanium or beta-titanium may also be employed. The wires are secured to the brackets using small elastic o-rings or self-ligating brackets. To add a touch of personalization to the treatment, patients can choose from various colors for their o-rings, allowing their smile to reflect their unique personality. Archwires are available in different sizes and materials to accommodate the specific tooth movements required. Throughout the course of treatment, drName periodically replaces the wires, starting with thinner sizes and progressing to thicker ones, ensuring a customized approach tailored to each patient’s needs. ## Metal Bands: Anchoring Stability Metal bands, also known as orthodontic bands, serve as thin, metal rings that anchor dental appliances like braces, headgear, and expanders. These bands are typically made of stainless steel or titanium and are placed around the molars, providing a sturdy foundation for the orthodontic appliance. Dental cement is used to secure the bands in place, and a bracket is attached to the band to hold the archwire. Although metal bands are less commonly used today, as most orthodontic appliances directly attach brackets to the teeth, they may still be employed in specific cases where additional anchorage is necessary or when a patient has a dental restoration on a molar. ## Tooth Movement: The Journey to a New Smile Once drName places the brackets, wires, and bands, the transformative journey toward a new smile begins. This process is gradual, relying on the application of pressure from the archwire on the brackets to guide the teeth into their correct positions. In some cases, additional tools such as rubber bands or springs may be utilized to facilitate specific movements, such as shifting teeth from side to side. Notably, the archwire not only influences the teeth themselves but also exerts pressure on the surrounding tissues, known as periodontal ligaments, which results in the gradual loosening of teeth within their sockets. As the archwire continues to guide the teeth, they effectively move into their designated places. Throughout this process, the wire plays a vital role in maintaining the teeth’s new positions while allowing the supporting tissues to regenerate. It is crucial to note that the stabilization of teeth in their corrected alignment can take up to a year. To ensure optimal progress, drName schedules regular follow-up appointments during the period when the braces remain on the patient. This enables continuous monitoring of the treatment’s effectiveness and allows for any necessary adjustments to be made. Once the teeth have fully stabilized in their new positions, drName will remove the braces, unveiling a remarkable transformation and a brand new smile. The patient can enjoy the results of their orthodontic journey, with improved dental alignment, enhanced oral health, and a newfound sense of self-confidence. ## Braces Transform Smiles Braces serve as a remarkable tool used by orthodontists like drName at practiceName in Mesa to address various dental concerns and enhance smiles. By combining brackets, wires, and bands, braces exert gradual pressure on the teeth, guiding them into proper alignment over time. The process involves regular adjustments, as well as the use of additional tools when necessary, to achieve optimal results. With the expertise and guidance of drName, patients can embark on a transformative journey toward a beautiful, healthy smile and increased self-confidence. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW DO BRACES WORK ## Are braces only used for improving the appearance of crooked teeth? No, braces serve a broader purpose than just enhancing appearance. They can also address difficulties related to eating and speaking that arise from tooth misalignment. Furthermore, braces effectively tackle oral health issues like uneven tooth wear, jaw pain, and cavities resulting from challenges in cleaning gapped or crowded teeth. ## How long does it take for braces to stabilize teeth in their new positions? The process of stabilizing teeth in their corrected alignment can take up to a year. During this time, regular follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor the progress of the treatment and make any necessary adjustments. ## Can braces be discreetly worn? Yes, there are options for more discreet braces. Lingual braces, for example, have brackets placed on the back of the teeth, providing a less noticeable appearance. Ceramic brackets, which are tooth-colored, are also available for a more inconspicuous look. ## Are there different materials used for archwires in braces? Yes, archwires are typically made of stainless steel, but other materials like nickel-titanium or beta-titanium can also be used. The choice of material depends on the specific tooth movements required and the preferences of the patient. ## What are the functions of rubber bands in orthodontic treatment? Rubber bands are sometimes used in conjunction with braces to direct specific tooth movements. They can be used to guide teeth from side to side or to correct other specific alignment issues. ## Can braces be used for patients with dental restorations? In certain cases where additional anchorage is needed or when a patient has a dental restoration on a molar, metal bands may be used instead of attaching brackets directly to the teeth. These bands are placed around the molars and provide a stable anchor for the orthodontic appliance. ## Will wearing braces improve self-confidence? Yes, braces can have a positive impact on self-confidence. Patients who feel embarrassed about their smiles often experience low self-esteem. By addressing dental concerns and achieving a beautiful, aligned smile, braces can significantly improve a patient’s self-assurance and overall well-being. Your braces, bands, wires, aligners, and retainers can trap food debris and make it tricky to remove plaque with brushing and flossing. Practicing careful dental hygiene after eating is the best way to avoid plaque accumulation, tooth decay, and gum disease. Follow these oral hygiene tips for braces patients, and contact drName at practiceName in Mesa if you have more questions. ## Brushing Strive to brush your teeth three times each day to get rid of food particles that can build up in your teeth and braces. Aim to brush after breakfast, after lunch or right after school, after dinner, and at bedtime. ## Flossing Since aligners are removable, flossing will be not be affected.  Even though it can be time-consuming with braces, it’s important to floss your teeth daily, especially for adult patients. The ideal time is before going to bed so that your teeth are clean for the night. A reusable floss threader can be very helpful in getting the floss under your wires. Pull a small amount of floss through the threader before sliding it up and down along the front of every tooth. Floss gently around your archwire to avoid damaging it. ## Mouth Rinse A salt water mouth rinse can minimize gum or cheek inflammation, avoid infection, and reduce irritation caused by braces. Salt water rinsing promotes healing inside your mouth and reduced swelling. General irritation from braces, canker sores, cheek bites, or other minor gum issues can be improved by using this rinse. ## Interdental Toothbrush An interdental toothbrush means that it goes between the teeth. It is good for cleaning under and around your braces and archwires. Use an interdental toothbrush gently to avoid wire damage. ## Topical Fluoride To help prevent tooth decay while wearing braces, use a sodium fluoride gel. It kills bacteria and replenishes minerals in tooth enamel. Apply the gel with a toothbrush for one minute, then spit it out. Avoid eating, drinking, or rinsing for 30 minutes to let the active ingredient stay on your teeth. Remember, daily brushing and flossing are still necessary. ## Removable Appliance Part of your routine should be brushing your removable appliance every day. Just like your teeth, the appliance can accumulate plaque buildup. If you like you can soak your appliance daily in a denture cleaning tablet that has been dissolved in room temperature tap water. ## ADDITIONAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ORAL HYGIENE ## Can I use an electric toothbrush with braces? Yes, using an electric toothbrush can be effective for cleaning your teeth and braces. Look for a model with a small brush head and soft bristles, specifically designed for orthodontic patients. ## How should I clean my orthodontic retainer? If you have a removable orthodontic retainer, it’s important to clean it properly. Rinse it with water after each meal, and brush it gently with a toothbrush and mild soap or non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the retainer. ## Is it necessary to visit the dentist more frequently while wearing braces? Yes, it is recommended to maintain regular dental check-ups every six months, or as advised by your orthodontist. These visits allow the dentist to monitor your oral health, clean your teeth thoroughly, and make any necessary adjustments to your braces. ## Can I still whiten my teeth while wearing braces? It is generally not recommended to whiten your teeth while wearing braces. The brackets and wires can create areas of uneven coloration if you undergo teeth whitening treatments. It’s best to wait until after your braces are removed to achieve a consistent and desirable teeth whitening result. Early Intervention | Adult Treatment | Types of Braces | Treatment Length | FAQ about Orthodontics Your smile is one of the most important aspects of your appearance, and having a healthy, straight set of teeth can impact your life in more ways than you might think. Orthodontic treatment can not only improve the aesthetic appeal of your smile but also help you eat and speak more effectively, boosting your confidence and comfort. Orthodontics is a great way to ensure that your smile is the best it can be. That’s why finding a reputable and experienced orthodontist like drName at practiceName in Mesa can make a difference in your life. ## Early Intervention Orthodontic treatment is not just for teenagers anymore. According to the American Academy of Orthodontics, it’s important to start considering orthodontics much earlier, with children being evaluated by an orthodontist by age 7 for optimal results. During the evaluation, an orthodontist will carefully assess the child’s dental and skeletal development to identify any concerns that may impact their oral health and future smile. This includes examining teeth crowding, bite problems, or jaw misalignment. Early detection of such issues is crucial as it allows for the creation of a personalized treatment plan to guide jaw development and encourage proper permanent tooth eruption. By intervening early, orthodontic treatment can help prevent or minimize the severity of future orthodontic problems, potentially avoiding the need for extensive treatments like tooth extractions or jaw surgeries. Additionally, early intervention may address habits like thumb-sucking, which can negatively affect dental development. By addressing these concerns at an early stage, children can achieve a healthier, more stable smile in the long run. ## Adult Treatment While orthodontic treatment is commonly associated with children and teenagers, adults can also benefit significantly from it. It’s never too late to pursue orthodontic treatment, even for adults who never had braces before or have experienced teeth shifting over time. With advancements in orthodontic technology, such as invisible braces, adults now have more discreet and comfortable treatment options available. These modern orthodontic appliances, including clear aligners and clear braces, make the process more appealing to adults who may have concerns about the visibility of traditional metal braces. By seeking orthodontic treatment as an adult, individuals can achieve a beautiful smile and enhance their overall oral health and self-confidence.  Learn more about braces for adults. ## Types of Braces At practiceName, patients have access to various types of braces, each capable of helping them achieve a winning smile: - Traditional metal braces: This time-tested method utilizes metal brackets that are securely glued to the teeth. Archwires are then placed within the brackets and gradually adjusted to guide the teeth into better positions. Metal braces are highly effective and suitable for patients of all ages. - Damon braces: Similar to traditional braces, Damon braces also consist of brackets bonded to the teeth. However, the archwire attaches to the brackets using a unique sliding mechanism. This innovative approach often results in reduced discomfort and shorter treatment times for patients. - Damon clear braces: These braces offer the same advantages as Damon braces but feature clear brackets that blend in with the natural color of the teeth. This makes the treatment nearly invisible, providing patients with a more aesthetically pleasing option. - Clear aligners: Customized for each patient, clear aligners are a popular alternative to traditional braces. These transparent, removable plastic trays gradually move the teeth into better positions. Clear aligners offer the advantage of being virtually invisible and can be easily removed for eating, brushing, and flossing, making them a convenient choice for many patients. ## Treatment Length The duration of orthodontic treatment can vary depending on individual circumstances. During your consultation with drName at practiceName, a comprehensive evaluation will be conducted to determine the complexity of your orthodontic needs. Minor orthodontic issues generally require less time to correct, while more severe problems or complications may extend the treatment duration. Compliance with drName’s instructions, including regular check-ups and proper care of braces or aligners, is also essential for optimal results. On average, orthodontic treatment typically lasts between one to three years. However, it’s important to note that the primary goal is to achieve beautiful, long-lasting results rather than rushing through the process. By following drName’s guidance and staying committed to the treatment plan, you can obtain the smile you’ve always desired. It offers solutions to a variety of dental issues, from common problems such as overcrowding and misalignment to more complex cases requiring extensive treatment. By correcting these issues, orthodontic treatment not only enhances the appearance of your smile but also improves your oral health and overall well-being. In this article, we will explore the benefits of achieving a straighter smile through orthodontics and discuss some common treatments and techniques. ## Why Orthodontics Matters Having straight teeth goes beyond mere aesthetics. Orthodontic treatment plays a crucial role in maintaining good oral health. Misaligned teeth can lead to a range of dental problems, including: - Tooth Decay and Gum Disease: Crooked or crowded teeth can make it difficult to clean certain areas properly, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. - Bite Issues: Malocclusion, or an improper bite, can cause discomfort, difficulty in chewing, and even speech problems. - Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ): Misaligned teeth can strain the jaw joints, leading to TMJ disorders and related symptoms such as jaw pain, headaches, and facial discomfort. By addressing these issues, orthodontic treatment not only improves the appearance of your smile but also promotes better oral health and overall quality of life. ## Common Orthodontic Problems Orthodontics can effectively treat various dental problems. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common issues that orthodontists can address: ### Overcrowding Overcrowding occurs when there is insufficient space in the mouth for teeth to grow and align properly. This can lead to overlapping, crookedness, and difficulty in cleaning between the teeth. Orthodontic treatment, such as traditional braces or Invisalign, can gradually create space and align the teeth correctly, improving both appearance and functionality. ### Malocclusion Malocclusion refers to a misalignment of the upper and lower teeth when the jaw is closed. This can include issues such as an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite. Orthodontic treatment aims to correct these bite problems, allowing for proper alignment, improved chewing, and a more harmonious facial profile. ### Misaligned Midline A misaligned midline occurs when the centerline of the upper and lower teeth doesn’t match up. This can affect the aesthetics of your smile and may be associated with other bite issues. Orthodontic techniques, such as braces or aligners, can help align the midline, resulting in a more balanced and attractive smile. For more information on common orthodontic problems, you can visit our Common Problems page. ## Exploring Orthodontic Treatments at practiceName in Mesa Orthodontics offers a range of treatments tailored to individual needs and preferences. Phase 1 treatment is part of early intervention, which means that patients obtain treatment before all permanent teeth are in place. This enables drName to correct malocclusions that could be harder to treat later. This does not necessarily mean that no orthodontics will be required during adolescence, but it can make it less extensive. Some common treatments during Phase 1 are correcting tooth or jaw bite problems in which appearance, function or psychological concerns are noted. ##### What is Phase 2 treatment? Phase 2 treatment is conventional orthodontic work that begins when the final baby teeth are lost and the 12-year molars have been assessed or straightened. Typical treatment time for Phase 2 lasts between 2 to 3 years. ##### How do I know if Phase 1, Phase 2, or both are needed? Visiting drName by age 7 is the ideal way to learn if either treatment is needed. Roughly 10 to 20 percent of young patients receive advantages from Phase 1 treatment, and the remaining patients are placed in our growth and development program as they are monitored. ##### Dose early intervention really work? Better results from early intervention aren’t promised in every case, so each patient is evaluated to see if early treatment will provide significant benefits. Some patients find early treatment very meaningful in their long-term goals, but it depends on each patient. ## Tooth Mechanics: ##### What is Phase 1 treatment? Retainers play an important role after your braces are removed. They should be worn full-time for about a year, and then at night indefinitely. It’s a natural part of life for teeth to move, so retainers help ensure your orthodontic results stay the same for life. ##### What about retainers that are glued behind teeth? Some patients have retainers bonded to the back of lower teeth. Careful dental hygiene is necessary as well as regular dental checkups to monitor this kind of retainer. ## Wisdom Teeth: ##### Should wisdom teeth be removed? Wisdom teeth, or your third molars, may cause gum issues, swelling if they are impacted, or infection related to food trapped below the gums. Scheduling wisdom teeth removal if recommended by drName is a preferred choice rather than removing them under emergency conditions. ##### When should wisdom teeth be removed? Oral surgeons recommend removal when two-thirds or so of the root has formed. Sometime after the ages of 16 to 18 is the average time for removal. ## TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDERS (TMJ): ##### Can orthodontic treatment treat or cause TMJ problems? There is no proven link between orthodontic care and TMJ disorder. Issues related to TMJ can occur (or not) in all kinds of good or bad bites. ## Health Impacts: ##### Are there health benefits from wearing braces? Orthodontics helps improve the comfort of your bite, making it simpler to perform dental hygiene tasks that promote good oral health. Orthodontics also can improve your facial musculature, resulting in higher self-esteem. ##### Do enlarged adenoids and allergies affect braces? Mouth breathing due to enlarged tonsils, adenoids, or allergies can cause your upper and lower jaw to grow further apart and elongate your facial shape during growth. This may result in teeth crowding or narrow arches. ##### Does tongue thrust or low tongue posture affect braces? Similar to the effects of enlarged adenoids, the pressure from your tongue thrusting onto your front teeth can worsen teeth protrusion or spacing issues. While the process is generally smooth, there may be instances when orthodontic emergencies arise. It’s essential to know how to handle these situations promptly and effectively to minimize discomfort and prevent further complications. In this article, we will discuss common orthodontic emergencies and provide guidance on what to do when faced with an unexpected issue. ## Recognizing Orthodontic Emergencies Orthodontic emergencies can range from minor inconveniences to more significant problems. It’s crucial to be able to identify when an issue requires immediate attention. Here are some common orthodontic emergencies: - Pain or Discomfort: Discomfort is common when braces or aligners are first placed or adjusted. However, if you experience severe or persistent pain that cannot be alleviated with over-the-counter pain relievers, it may indicate an underlying issue. - Loose or Broken Brackets: Brackets are the small squares attached to the teeth that hold the archwire in place. If a bracket becomes loose or breaks, it can cause discomfort and affect the effectiveness of your treatment. - Protruding Wires: The wires used in orthodontic treatment may occasionally protrude and cause irritation or injury to the soft tissues inside your mouth. - Poking or Loose Wires: Wires that become loose or extend beyond the last bracket can cause discomfort and even poke the cheeks or gums. - Lost or Broken Retainers: If you have removable retainers, misplacing or damaging them can affect the stability of your orthodontic results. ## Steps to Take During an Orthodontic Emergency When faced with an orthodontic emergency, follow these steps to manage the situation effectively: - Assess the Situation: Start by evaluating the severity of the issue. If you are experiencing severe pain or significant discomfort, contact your orthodontist immediately. They will provide guidance and may schedule an emergency appointment. - Temporary Relief: If you are experiencing mild discomfort, there are a few temporary measures you can take until you can see your orthodontist: Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate temporary discomfort. Follow the instructions on the packaging and consult your orthodontist if pain persists. - Wax Application: Orthodontic wax can be used to cover sharp edges, loose wires, or brackets that are causing irritation. Apply a small piece of wax to the affected area for temporary relief. Visit our page on Orthodontic Emergencies to learn more. - Contact Your Orthodontist: It’s crucial to inform your orthodontist about the emergency as soon as possible. They will provide guidance based on the severity of the issue and may schedule an immediate appointment to address the problem. - Follow Instructions: Your orthodontist will provide specific instructions based on the nature of the emergency. It’s important to follow their guidance closely to ensure the best possible outcome. ## Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies While it’s impossible to predict every orthodontic emergency, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk: - Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss your teeth diligently to prevent tooth decay and gum problems that could complicate your orthodontic treatment. Visit our page on Oral Hygiene to learn more. - Follow Dietary Guidelines: Be mindful of what you eat to avoid damaging your braces or aligners. Certain foods, such as hard candies, sticky sweets, and crunchy snacks, can cause brackets to break or wires to bend. - Attend Regular Check-ups: Regular visits to your orthodontist allow them to monitor your progress and identify potential issues before they become emergencies. Don’t miss your scheduled appointments. - Handle Appliances with Care: Be gentle when cleaning your braces or inserting and removing aligners. Rough handling can lead to damage or dislodgement. ## Trust Your Orthodontic Team in Mesa Orthodontic emergencies can be stressful, but remember that you are not alone. In fact, addressing dental issues at an early age can lead to lifelong benefits for children. Early intervention in orthodontics allows for timely correction of common dental problems, ensuring proper dental development and setting the stage for a healthy and confident smile. In this article, we will explore the significance of orthodontic treatment for children and the advantages of early intervention. ## The Importance of Early Orthodontic Intervention Early orthodontic intervention focuses on diagnosing and treating dental issues in children before they become more severe. By addressing these problems at a young age, orthodontists can guide the growth and development of the jaws and teeth, leading to improved dental health and overall well-being. Let’s delve into the key reasons why early intervention is crucial: ### 1. Preventing and Correcting Dental Problems Early orthodontic treatment helps prevent and correct dental problems that may arise during childhood, such as: - Malocclusion: Malocclusion refers to the misalignment of teeth or improper positioning of the jaws. It includes bite problems like overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite. Timely intervention can prevent these issues from worsening and ensure proper alignment of the teeth and jaws. - Crowding: Crowding occurs when there is insufficient space in the mouth for all the teeth to erupt properly. Early treatment can create space and guide the teeth into their appropriate positions, minimizing the need for more extensive interventions later on. ### 2. Facilitating Proper Jaw Growth and Development During childhood, the jaws are still growing and developing. Early orthodontic intervention can help guide this growth and correct any imbalances or abnormalities. By influencing jaw development at an early stage, orthodontists can improve facial aesthetics, correct jaw discrepancies, and enhance overall facial harmony. ### 3. Enhancing Oral Health and Function Orthodontic issues can impact oral health and function. Misaligned teeth can make oral hygiene more challenging, leading to a higher risk of cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems. By addressing these issues early on, orthodontic treatment improves oral hygiene and facilitates proper dental function, reducing the likelihood of future complications. “Early intervention in orthodontics can prevent dental problems from worsening, guide jaw development, and promote optimal oral health and function in children.” – Discover more about the importance of early orthodontic treatment. ## Orthodontic Treatments for Children in Mesa Orthodontic treatments for children aim to correct dental issues and guide the growth and alignment of the teeth and jaws. Here are some commonly used treatments: ### Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment: Specialized Care for Young Patients Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a comprehensive approach that addresses specific problems in two stages. The first phase usually begins during childhood when a mixture of primary and permanent teeth are present. This phase focuses on guiding jaw growth and creating space for permanent teeth to erupt properly. The second phase, which occurs later when all permanent teeth have erupted, involves further alignment and fine-tuning. Two-phase treatment can optimize results and reduce the need for more invasive procedures in the future. Learn more about this specialized care on our Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment page. ### Braces for Teens and Kids: Traditional Approach for Comprehensive Correction Traditional braces are a tried and tested orthodontic treatment option for children. They involve attaching metal brackets to the teeth and connecting them with wires. Regular adjustments guide the teeth into their proper positions, correcting bite problems and aligning the jaws. Braces are effective in addressing a wide range of orthodontic issues and can be personalized to meet each child’s unique needs. To learn more about braces for children, visit our page on Braces for Teens and Kids. ### Retainers: Maintaining Results for Long-Term Benefits Retainers play a vital role in orthodontic treatment for children. After the active phase of treatment, retainers help maintain the achieved results and prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Retainers can be removable or fixed, depending on the child’s specific needs. To understand the importance of retainers and their maintenance, visit our page on Retainers. ## Beginning the Orthodontic Journey for Your Child Taking the first step towards orthodontic treatment for your child is easy. However, issues with the TMJ can lead to discomfort, pain, and dysfunction. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment can be a valuable tool in addressing TMJ disorders and alleviating associated symptoms. In this article, we will explore the connection between orthodontics and TMJ disorders and discuss how orthodontic interventions can help restore harmony to your jaw function. ## Understanding TMJ Disorders TMJ disorders encompass a range of conditions that affect the temporomandibular joint and the surrounding muscles. Common symptoms of TMJ disorders include: - Jaw Pain: Persistent pain or tenderness in the jaw joint area is a key indicator of a TMJ disorder. - Clicking or Popping Sounds: Some individuals may experience clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening or closing their mouths. - Limited Jaw Movement: TMJ disorders can restrict the range of motion in the jaw, making it difficult to open or close the mouth fully. - Locking of the Jaw: In severe cases, the jaw may become locked in an open or closed position. ## The Role of Orthodontics in TMJ Treatment Orthodontic treatment at practiceName in Mesa focuses on aligning the teeth and jaws to achieve optimal bite function and facial harmony. While TMJ disorders may have multiple causes, malocclusions (improper bite alignment) can contribute to their development. Orthodontic interventions can help address these issues, leading to improvements in TMJ function and symptom relief. ### Bite Correction One of the primary goals of orthodontic treatment is to correct bite misalignments. By using treatments such as traditional braces or clear aligners like Invisalign, our Mesa orthodontist can guide the teeth into their optimal positions, allowing for better bite alignment. Improved bite alignment can alleviate pressure on the TMJ, reducing pain and dysfunction. ### Orthodontic Appliances Orthodontists may also recommend specific appliances to address TMJ disorders. For example, a retainer or a jaw repositioning appliance can be used to reposition the jaw and provide relief from TMJ-related symptoms. These appliances are customized to suit your specific needs and are designed to promote optimal jaw alignment and function. ### Multidisciplinary Approach In some cases, a multidisciplinary approach involving collaboration between an orthodontist and other healthcare professionals, such as oral surgeons or physical therapists, may be necessary for comprehensive TMJ treatment. This approach allows for a more targeted and holistic management of TMJ disorders, addressing both the dental and musculoskeletal aspects of the condition. ## Consultation and Treatment If you suspect you have a TMJ disorder or are experiencing symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking sounds, or limited jaw movement, it is essential to seek professional evaluation. Our Mesa orthodontist will conduct a thorough examination, which may include dental imaging, to assess your bite and jaw function. Based on the findings, they will develop a personalized treatment plan to address your TMJ concerns. ### Collaboration and Patient Education During your orthodontic consultation, your orthodontist will explain the proposed treatment options and the potential benefits they offer for your TMJ disorder. It is crucial to ask questions and voice any concerns you may have. Understanding the treatment process and its potential impact on your TMJ function will help you make informed decisions regarding your orthodontic journey. ## The Connection Between Orthodontics and Overall Oral Health It’s important to recognize that orthodontic treatment not only helps address TMJ disorders but also contributes to your overall oral health. Proper bite alignment promotes effective chewing and digestion, reduces the risk of tooth wear, and can improve speech and self-confidence. It plays a significant role in improving your overall oral health. The alignment of your teeth and the proper functioning of your bite impact various aspects of your oral well-being. In this article, we will explore the connection between orthodontics and your overall oral health, shedding light on why orthodontic treatment is not just about aesthetics but also about maintaining a healthy mouth. ## The Relationship Between Orthodontics and Oral Health Orthodontics focuses on correcting misaligned teeth and bite irregularities. By achieving proper alignment and function, orthodontic treatment can positively impact several aspects of your oral health. Let’s examine some key areas where orthodontics and oral health intersect. ### 1. Improved Oral Hygiene Straight teeth are easier to clean and maintain than crowded or misaligned teeth. Properly aligned teeth allow for more effective brushing and flossing, reducing the accumulation of plaque and tartar. With easier access to all tooth surfaces, you can maintain better oral hygiene practices, reducing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. For comprehensive information on oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment, visit our page on Caring for Your Braces. ### 2. Reduced Risk of Dental Problems Misaligned teeth can contribute to various dental issues. Crowded or overlapping teeth can create tight spaces where plaque and food particles become trapped, leading to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum inflammation. Malocclusion, such as an overbite or underbite, can strain the jaw joints and cause uneven tooth wear. Orthodontic treatment helps address these issues, reducing the risk of dental problems and promoting a healthier mouth. ### 3. Enhanced Bite Function A misaligned bite can affect your ability to chew food properly and may result in uneven pressure distribution on the teeth. Over time, this can lead to jaw pain, headaches, and increased wear on certain teeth. Orthodontic treatment aligns the bite, ensuring that the upper and lower teeth fit together harmoniously, improving chewing efficiency and reducing the strain on your jaw joints. Learn more about how braces work to correct your bite on our page How Do Braces Work?. ### 4. Prevention of Jaw Disorders Orthodontic treatment can also help prevent or alleviate jaw disorders, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. TMJ disorders can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, and headaches. By aligning the teeth and correcting bite discrepancies, orthodontics promotes proper jaw alignment, reducing the risk of TMJ-related issues. ### 5. Optimal Speech Function Teeth and their position play a crucial role in speech production. Malocclusion or misaligned teeth can affect speech clarity and pronunciation. Orthodontic treatment can help address these issues, enabling you to achieve optimal speech function and clarity. ### 6. Boost in Self-Confidence While not directly related to oral health, it’s important to acknowledge the psychological benefits of orthodontic treatment. A beautiful, confident smile can have a positive impact on your self-esteem and overall well-being. Orthodontic treatment helps you achieve a smile you can be proud of, boosting your self-confidence and positively impacting various aspects of your life. ## Seeking Orthodontic Care in Mesa for Your Oral Health Orthodontic treatment offers more than just cosmetic benefits. These interruptions can have a significant impact on your overall well-being, leading to daytime fatigue, poor concentration, and even systemic health issues. While continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines are a standard treatment for sleep apnea, orthodontic interventions can also play a crucial role in improving breathing and enhancing the quality of sleep. In this article, we will explore the connection between orthodontics and sleep apnea and discuss how orthodontic treatment can help address this sleep disorder. ## Understanding Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea occurs when the airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep, leading to breathing disruptions. The two primary types of sleep apnea are: - Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): The most common form of sleep apnea, OSA occurs when the soft tissues at the back of the throat collapse, blocking the airway. - Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): In CSA, the brain fails to send the appropriate signals to the muscles that control breathing, resulting in interrupted airflow. Common symptoms of sleep apnea include: - Loud snoring - Excessive daytime sleepiness - Morning headaches - Irritability - Difficulty concentrating ## The Role of Orthodontics in Sleep Apnea Treatment in Mesa Orthodontic treatment aims to correct dental and skeletal irregularities that can contribute to sleep apnea. By addressing structural issues and improving the alignment of the jaws and teeth, orthodontics can help widen the airway, reduce airway obstructions, and enhance breathing during sleep. Here are some ways orthodontic interventions can benefit individuals with sleep apnea: ### 1. Expansion of the Dental Arches Orthodontists can utilize techniques such as palatal expansion to widen the dental arches and create additional space for the tongue. This expansion helps alleviate airway constriction, facilitating better airflow during sleep. By using orthodontic appliances like expanders or braces, orthodontists can gradually widen the upper arch and improve breathing. ### 2. Jaw Positioning Orthodontic treatment can also address underlying skeletal issues that contribute to sleep apnea. By repositioning the jaws, orthodontists can optimize the alignment between the upper and lower jaws, allowing for better airway alignment and reducing obstructions. Treatments such as two-phase orthodontic treatment or Invisalign aligners can help correct jaw misalignments, promoting improved breathing patterns during sleep. ### 3. Retainer Therapy Retainers are often prescribed after orthodontic treatment to maintain the corrected position of the teeth. In some cases, specialized retainers, such as mandibular advancement devices, can be used to reposition the lower jaw slightly forward. This forward positioning helps keep the airway open, preventing airway collapse and reducing sleep apnea symptoms. ## Seeking Professional Evaluation and Treatment If you suspect you have sleep apnea or are experiencing symptoms associated with this sleep disorder, it is crucial to seek professional evaluation. An orthodontist experienced in sleep apnea treatment can perform a comprehensive assessment, which may include dental and skeletal evaluations, airway assessments, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals, such as sleep medicine specialists. ### Collaborative Approach for Personalized Care In many cases, a collaborative approach involving orthodontists, sleep medicine specialists, and other healthcare professionals may be necessary to develop a personalized treatment plan. This comprehensive approach ensures that all aspects of sleep apnea management are addressed, including orthodontic interventions, lifestyle modifications, and, if needed, CPAP therapy. ## Improving Your Quality of Sleep Quality sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. If you suspect sleep apnea or have been diagnosed with this sleep disorder, orthodontic treatment may offer significant benefits. Retainers play a crucial role in preserving the alignment of your teeth, ensuring that your smile remains perfect for years to come. In this article, we will explore the importance of retainers and provide valuable insights into post-treatment care to help you maintain your beautiful smile. ## The Role of Retainers Retainers are custom-made orthodontic appliances designed to hold the teeth in their new positions after the completion of orthodontic treatment. Once your braces or aligners are removed, the teeth may have a natural tendency to shift back to their original positions. Retainers help prevent this by providing gentle and consistent pressure, ensuring that the teeth remain in their corrected positions. ## Types of Retainers There are two primary types of retainers: removable and fixed. ### 1. Removable Retainers Removable retainers are typically made of clear plastic and are designed to be easily taken out and put back in. They offer convenience and flexibility, allowing you to remove them during meals and for oral hygiene routines. It’s important to wear removable retainers as instructed by your orthodontist to maintain the desired tooth alignment. Visit our article on Retainers to learn more about their benefits and care instructions. ### 2. Fixed Retainers Fixed retainers, also known as permanent or bonded retainers, are thin wires that are attached to the back surfaces of the teeth. They are usually placed on the lower front teeth but can also be used on the upper teeth if necessary. Fixed retainers provide continuous support and are an excellent option for individuals who may be prone to forgetting or losing removable retainers. Proper oral hygiene is essential with fixed retainers, and special tools, such as floss threaders or interdental brushes, may be needed to clean between the teeth. Learn more about fixed retainers on our Retainers page. ## Post-Treatment Care Guidelines In addition to wearing retainers, following proper post-treatment care guidelines will help maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment. Here are some essential tips to consider: ### 1. Oral Hygiene Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is crucial for the health of your teeth and gums. Brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and along the gumline. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are also important for maintaining optimal oral health. ### 2. Retainer Care Clean your retainers regularly using a soft toothbrush and mild soap or non-alcoholic denture cleaner. Avoid using hot water, as it can distort the shape of the retainers. Additionally, store your retainers in their designated case when not in use to protect them from damage or loss. ### 3. Healthy Diet Maintain a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoid excessively sticky or hard foods that can potentially damage your teeth or the orthodontic appliances. Refer to our article on Foods to Avoid for more detailed information. ### 4. Regular Orthodontic Check-ups Schedule regular follow-up appointments with your orthodontist as recommended. These visits allow your orthodontist to monitor the stability of your tooth alignment and make any necessary adjustments to your retainers. ## Maintaining Your Perfect Smile Retainers and proper post-treatment care are essential for preserving the results of your orthodontic treatment and maintaining your perfect smile. However, when participating in sports, it’s essential to prioritize the safety of your teeth and jaw, especially if you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. Whether you’re wearing braces, aligners, or retainers, taking proactive measures to protect your oral health is crucial. In this article, we’ll explore the importance of sports safety during orthodontic treatment in Mesa and provide valuable tips to safeguard your teeth and jaw while enjoying your favorite physical activities. ## The Risks of Sports Injuries Engaging in sports and physical activities without proper protection can lead to injuries that affect your teeth, jaw, and overall oral health. Without the necessary precautions, common risks include: - Dental Injuries: Impact or trauma to the mouth can result in chipped, fractured, or even knocked-out teeth. These injuries require immediate dental attention and may have long-term consequences for your oral health. - Soft Tissue Injuries: Sports-related accidents can also cause cuts, lacerations, and damage to the soft tissues inside the mouth, such as the gums, cheeks, and tongue. - Jaw Injuries: Forceful blows to the face can result in jaw fractures or dislocations, leading to pain, difficulty in opening or closing the mouth, and other functional issues. ## Sports Safety with Orthodontic Appliances If you’re currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, it’s crucial to protect your teeth, braces, aligners, or retainers while participating in sports. Here are some practical tips to ensure sports safety: ### 1. Wear a Protective Mouthguard A properly fitted mouthguard is essential for protecting your teeth, lips, and tongue from injury. When participating in contact sports or activities with a risk of falls or collisions, wearing a mouthguard can significantly reduce the likelihood of dental and soft tissue injuries. There are different types of mouthguards available, including: - Stock Mouthguards: These pre-formed mouthguards are readily available and affordable but may not provide the best fit and protection. - Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: These mouthguards are softened in hot water and then molded to your teeth for a customized fit. They offer better protection and comfort compared to stock mouthguards. - Custom-Fitted Mouthguards: These mouthguards are professionally made by your orthodontist. They provide the highest level of protection and are custom-designed to fit your teeth and orthodontic appliances perfectly. Remember to wear your mouthguard consistently during practice sessions, games, and any other physical activities to minimize the risk of injuries. ### 2. Use Protective Gear Compatible with Orthodontic Appliances If you’re wearing braces, aligners, or retainers, consider additional protective gear to ensure optimal safety. For example: - Braces: Use a mouthguard designed specifically for braces to protect your lips, cheeks, and brackets from impact. Your orthodontist can recommend the most suitable type of mouthguard for your needs. - Aligners: During physical activities, you can temporarily remove your aligners and store them in a protective case. Be sure to clean your teeth thoroughly before reinserting the aligners after the activity. - Retainers: If you wear a retainer, consult your orthodontist about whether it’s necessary to remove it during sports or if it can provide sufficient protection. They may recommend using a specialized mouthguard that accommodates the retainer. ### 3. Follow Good Oral Hygiene Practices Maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential for everyone, especially during orthodontic treatment. Regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Pay extra attention to cleaning around brackets, wires, aligners, or retainers to remove any food particles or plaque that can contribute to dental issues. ### 4. Seek Immediate Dental Attention for Injuries Despite taking precautions, accidents can still happen. If you experience a sports-related dental or jaw injury, it’s vital to seek immediate dental attention. Contact your orthodontist or dentist as soon as possible to address any concerns or emergencies. They will evaluate the extent of the injury and provide the necessary treatment to ensure optimal healing and oral health. “Play it safe while enjoying your favorite sports! With their proven track record and ability to address a wide range of dental issues, traditional braces continue to be a popular choice among orthodontic patients. In this article, we will explore the benefits and functionality of traditional braces, providing insights into why they remain a trusted option in orthodontics at practiceName in Mesa. ## How Do Traditional Braces Work? Traditional braces consist of metal brackets that are bonded to the teeth using dental adhesive. These brackets are then connected by archwires and secured in place using elastic bands. The braces gradually apply gentle pressure on the teeth, causing them to shift into the desired positions over time. The orthodontist will make periodic adjustments to the braces, guiding the teeth into proper alignment and addressing bite problems, such as overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite. ## The Benefits of Traditional Braces ### 1. Comprehensive Correction Traditional braces are highly versatile and can effectively correct a wide range of orthodontic issues. Whether it’s crowded teeth, gaps, or misalignments, traditional braces offer comprehensive correction by precisely guiding the teeth into their proper positions. They can address both cosmetic concerns and functional bite irregularities, resulting in improved oral health and a more confident smile. ### 2. Personalized Treatment Each set of traditional braces is customized to fit the unique dental structure of the patient. Orthodontists carefully design the treatment plan, taking into account the specific needs and goals of the individual. This personalized approach ensures that the braces provide the most effective and efficient results, tailored to the patient’s unique requirements. ### 3. Proven Reliability Traditional braces have stood the test of time and have been used successfully in countless orthodontic cases. Their reliability and effectiveness in achieving optimal teeth alignment make them a trusted choice for orthodontic treatment. They have a long history of delivering predictable results and are continually enhanced through ongoing advancements in orthodontic technology. ### 4. Suitable for Various Cases Traditional braces are suitable for a wide range of orthodontic cases, including severe misalignments and complex bite irregularities. They can address issues that may be challenging for other treatment options. Whether the patient is a child, teenager, or adult, traditional braces offer a reliable and effective solution for achieving a straighter and healthier smile. ## Caring for Your Traditional Braces Proper care and maintenance of traditional braces are essential to ensure successful treatment and oral health. Here are some important guidelines to follow: - Oral Hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. Brush your teeth thoroughly after each meal or snack to remove food particles that can get trapped in the braces. Floss daily using floss threaders or orthodontic floss to clean between the teeth and wires. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are also recommended. - Dietary Considerations: Certain foods can damage braces or get stuck in the brackets and wires. Avoid hard and sticky foods that may cause brackets to break or wires to bend. It’s important to follow the orthodontist’s guidelines on foods to avoid during treatment. Our Foods to Avoid page provides useful information on what to steer clear of. - Handling Discomfort: It’s common to experience some discomfort or soreness when first getting braces or after adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relievers and applying orthodontic wax to any areas causing irritation can help alleviate the discomfort. If you have concerns or experience persistent pain, contact your orthodontist.
